Notes

Photograph of 725 S. Magnolia taken from the road. Photo was taken for the Historic Resources Survey of Palestine, Texas 1989-1991. This large, 2-story frame house is a good example of the Queen Anne style, an architectural expression that was quite popular in Palestine during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The most noteworthy feature of this building is the gabled extension on the front slope of the steeply pitched hipped roof. The extension has a shingled exterior finish and an intricately detailed bargeboard. The only major alteration appears to be a bungalow-like porch with tapered box columns. Local contractor Kindred Henry Muse built this house in 1902 for Morris and Clara Halporn, both natives of Germany. Mr. Halporn was a grocer and saloon keeper, according to a local historian. During the 1920s through the 1940s the house was owned and occupied by Bessie Hutchings, who in the 1920s was manager of the ready-to-wear department at Hodges Dry Goods Store. By the 1940s she was a clerk at the Grand Leader department store.
