Thought for Today
"History is but a kind of Newgate calendar, a register of the
crimes and miseries that man has inflicted on his fellow-man."
— Washington Irving, American author (1783-1859).

Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice! ..

James Crow, USWA District
12 organizer, has been in
Baytown . guiding Jindal
employees through the process
of voting on and organizing a
union.
“I am proud that Mr. Mishra
has agreed to work in good
faith with the United Steel
Workers of America and we
Hospital

able to make the (legal) pay-
ments.”
Bankruptcy laws require that
legal services be paid in
advance “so the debt attorney
does not become a creditor,”
Butler said. Security State
Bank of Anahuac loaned the
hospital $5,700 to make an ini-
tial legal payment, he said.
“It is uncommon to see a
bank extend these services to a
company in this position,”
Butler said. “If not for Douglas
Cameron (Security president),
we would be in very bad
shape.”
Goode said Cameron has
served on the hospital board
and has a genuine interest in
seeing the hospital survive.
“If this was Houston, no mid-
management banker would
sign their name on this loan,”
Goode said. “In the J small
towns, everyone sticks together
and provides a helping .hand.”
Mike Rodgers, an .Entergy
spokesman in Beaumont, said
the company had no choice hut
to threaten disconnection.
“We try to work things out
with the customer, but in this
case nothing was getting done,”
Rodgers said. “There comes a
point when we have to exercise
our right to be paid for the ser-
vice we have already delivered.
If not, the costs are spread to all
customers.”
Rodgers said the disconnec-
tion notice will be canceled if
so ordered by the bankruptcy
court.
“I think they (Entergy) were
hoping to be paid before we
filed” for bankruptcy, Goode
said. “All they did was force us
to take immediate action.”
Under bankruptcy proce-
dures, all creditors are guarap.
teed collection, but Butler said
the money is paid “in short
increments over a long stretch
oftime.”
The hospital owes creditors
approximately $100,000, but
the facility is owed about $1
million, Butler said. The hospi-
tal has 57 employees and 15
beds.
A public meeting was held
last week to address the hospi-
tal’s future.
“I think everyone left feeling
good about the situation,”
Goode said. “We explained
how (bankruptcy) worked and
why this was necessary.”
Goode has asserted through-
out the bankruptcy process that
he is confident Bayside can
continue normal operations
during the .bankruptcy proce-
dure and the hospital has no
intention of closing, Goode
said.
Bayside is the only hospital
in Chambers County. In an,
emergency situation, there is
not always time to transport a
patient to Baytown or
Beaumont, Goode said.

.will work in good faith with
Jindal to negotiate a contract
that is acceptable to both par-
ties,” Grew said.
Crow gave full credit for the
victory to. the Jindal employees
who first approached USWA
for organizing assistance in
early fall. The USWA filed an
election petition on their behalf
with the NLRB on Oct. 2.
“The people in the plant
deserve the credit for winning
the election,” said Crow.
“Their hard work and patience
paid off by voting almost two-
to-one for a steelworkers
union.”
Organization and negotiat-
ing activities will be delayed
approximately 10 days until
the election receives formal
certification from the NLRB,
Crow said.
“After certification, the
employees will then vote for
their negotiating committee,”
said Crow. “Then the negotia-
tions can begin.”
