Notes

Taken from: Historic Resources Survey of Palestine, Texas: An Inventory for The City of Palestine, Volume IV, Color Slides, June 1991

Photograph of 908 W. Louisiana taken from the road. Photo was taken for the Historic Resources Survey of Palestine, Texas 1989-1991. Although classified as a modified L-plan house, this property illustrates the transition from the L-plan to the modified L-plan house form. Its scale and proportions are similar to most of the L-plan houses in Palestine, but the residence has a hipped roof with gabled extensions, rather than the cross-gable roof that is seen on all other L-plan houses. The hipped roof is a prominent feature, but it is a physical characteristic that helps to distinguish the modified L-plan as a distinct subtype of domestic building. W.L. and Catherine Harper owned and occupied this dwelling as early as 1926. Mr. Harper worked in the machinery department of the I&GN Railroad. By 1933, however, the house began being occupied by a succession of renters, including: Robert B. Hogue, an electrician, and his wife Myrtle, who lived here during the mid-1930s; and Charles C. Gilbert, a mechanic for the Joyce Motor Company, and his wife Orilla, who lived here around 1940-41.
