Notes

Photograph of 816 W. Louisiana taken from the road. Photo was taken for the Historic Resources Survey of Palestine, Texas 1989-1991. Although many examples of the modified L-plan house still stand throughout the city’s historic neighborhoods, few retain their appearance and character to such a high degree as this 1-story frame dwelling on W. Louisiana Street. The building, with its hipped roof and gabled extension, has a porch with an L-shaped plan and Queen Anne-style detailing. John G. and Louise Wharton were among the first residents of this house; they owned and occupied the dwelling from as early as 1926 through the late 1930s. Mr. Wharton was a fireman for the I&GN Railroad, and later an engineer for Missouri Pacific. By 1941 the house was owned by Bert H. Smith, who lived here with his wife Annie. Mr. Smith was a switchman for Missouri Pacific.
