Dial Light:
By Joe Fielder
"Hullo Joe! What d'ya know?"
"I just got back from a vaudeville
show " Oh paidon mo folks I
didn't know anyone was listening.
Well hero we are again pushing
off on another year's go-around.
Tlio Piper wishes to welcome back
old faces and friends nnd extend
a heaity gieetlng to the freshmen
(Mr. I'ipcr tu you!). II. P. C. is
a grand old place as you'll soon
find out i if not all ready).
The pin pose of DIAL LIGHTS
is to better acquaint the general
.student body with radio its stars
and performers its programs how
why mid where the prognun.s take
place Of course DIAL LIGHTS
will be written from the personal
view of The Piper but if any of
you wish to make comments offer
criticism or suggestions The Piper
will l)e glad to receive thorn (No
piomises aie made as to what will
be done with them.)
The seniors and some few jun-
iors may recognize the title as hav-
T"cn it befoie. The title was
originated bv Leal Schurman the
wiitcr nf this column two years
ago and The Piper liked It so well
that he has decided to continue
the column under that name (with
apologies to Mr. Schurman).
So many things have happened
dining the summer and have hap-
pened m fast in nidio that The
Piper hardly knows where to be-
gin. However ho would like to
pay tnbiito to the National Co-
lumbia Mutual nnd all other net-
works in radio for the way the war
news is being handled. At all
times the sponsois of the different
radio programs have allowed their
programs to be interrupted so the
public could have the news as it
flashed to this country. These
companies have nlso arranged for
broadcasts from the foreign capi-
tals of the nations at war by spe-
cial company announcers. To an
institution which acts with such
speed and accuracy in strenuous
times as tlio.se for the education of
the American public The Piper
doffs his hat.
Yea verily the summer hath
not only brought .some changes In
programs on the air but It hath
uncovered some new talent. Most
of you have probably heard a new
voice on 13ing Crosby's Kraft
Cheese program. If so it was
"Bing'.s girl Friday" or In other
words Miss Patricia Friday. She's
called Bing's girl because he made
the discovery himself one Friday
night in the Victor Hugo Cafo
where she sang In a talent contest.
That night this seventeen year old
University of California student
won the contest and through Bing
a contract with Kraft's Music Hall.
Tlio I'ipcr predicts another star
for Kraft's Music Hall. Inci-
dentally she has turned down
several offers from major movie
studios
If next Sunday evening you
should happen to switch your radio
dial to Woodbury's Hollywood
Playhouse at seven o'clock you
may think you are hearing the
popular Don Amccho In another
play. You will bo hearing an
Ameche but not Don as ho is still
M. C. for Chase & Sanborn which
is on the air an hour earlier The

younger brother of Don's. He has
the same voice looks mannerisms
and acting ability as big brother
Don. The famous Ameche laugh
Is even present. The Piper can
see no reason for the younger
Ameche not to be successful un-
less one Ameche at a time is
enough for the public.
It seems dear students-of-the-air
that someone somehow some-
where held an election as to the
popularity of stars announcers
and programs. Here they are. If
you don't agree you elect the one
you want:
Best variety program Chase &
Sanborn; best audience-participation
program Kay Kyser's Class;
best master of ceremonies Don
Ameche; best dramatic serial One
Man's Family; best dance orches-
tra Wayne King; best swing band
Artie Shaw; best swing singer
Bea Wain; best swing instrumen-
talist Tommy Dorsey; best com-
mentator (man) Lowell Thomas;
best commentator (woman) Dor-
othy Thompson; best comedian
Edgar Bergan-McCarthy; best pop-
ular song singer (man) Bing
Crosby; best popular song singer
(woman) Kate Smith; best an-
nouncer Don Wilson; best dra-
matic program Lux Theatre; best
radio actor Don Ameche; best
radio actress Claire Trevor; star
of stars Nelson Eddy.

"A change of emphasis on the
values of campus life Is necessary.
High scholarship should rank as
the most valuable achievement a
student can make. This means
that useless organizations and ac-
tivities ought to be discarded
others revitalized and campus life
reoriented." Norris T. Prltchard
