Notes

Photograph of 1112 W. Kolstad taken from the road. Photo was taken for the Historic Resources Survey of Palestine, Texas 1989-1991. The residential neighborhood northwest of Palestine’s downtown contains a large number of late 19th and early 20th century vernacular houses. Most have been altered over the years, but this L-plan dwelling on W. Kolstad Street is virtually unaltered and represents a good example of a locally common plan type. The house exhibits some Queen Anne-style ornamentation, as evidenced by the use of shingled siding in the front gable end. According to city directories, A. Graser and his wife Elizabeth owned and occupied this house as early as 1926. Mr. Graser operated a grocery at this location. By the mid-1930s Fred A. and Ona Elskes had purchased the house, and they lived here through the rest of the decade. Mr. Elskes was a helper at the City Water Company. Ellen Ricks, identified as “colored,” lived here by 1941; she was a maid at Memorial Hospital.
