Notes

Photograph of 523 W. Kolstad taken from the road. Photo was taken for the Historic Resources Survey of Palestine, Texas 1989-1991. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, home builders and contractors often erected relatively small, simple houses but decorated them with trim suggestive of the Queen Anne style. This 1-story frame residence presents an outstanding example of this common practice. The hipped roof and gabled extension are characteristics typical of the modified L-plan house, almost 200 of which still survive. Distinctive architectural elements include the jigsawn and turned-wood trim on the porch and the jigsawn bargeboard and sunburst work on the front gable end. Palestine city directories not that Claude C. Matthews and his wife Florence rented this house from as early as 1926 until the late 1930s, an unusually long time for renters to occupy one dwelling. Mr. Matthews worked as an engineer, first for the I&GN Railroad and later for Missouri Pacific. By 1941 the house was occupied by Mrs. Ella Calhoun, the widow of T.J. Calhoun.
