"Tmi'FK TEWKH" moms and
dads once told and probably still
tell tlioir children.
And the words most often follow-
ing' arc something like this: "Or
you won't fret your allowance this
week."
This is an age-old wav of keep-
ing children in line while teaching
them to mind their manners and
to maintain their self-control.
Ttut when a fellow gets in col-
lege there's usually no one hold-
ing something over his head to
make sure he keeps a tight grip on
his temper. Hence if flare-ups
aren't cured earlier during allow-
ance days there's little reason to
believe they'll be cured any later
This thing called temper can
make or break a basketball play-
er. WE'D GI'ESS M Klovon. as well
ns most members of the IIPC bas-
ketball team took pretty good care
of his allowance years back Klo-
ven playing probably his best
game of the season against Sul
Ross here Monday night spent
much of his time picking himself
up off the floor or scraping him-
self off the wall.
Still he maintained his com-
posure to mesh 10 points. And.
to verify this his being knocked
around didn't upset him too much
he cashed in on seven of eight free
throws attempted.
He's not the onlv one who took
bumps and bruises' and who takes
them every game So did everv
other TIPC player and for that
matter every other Sul Ross play-
er. KASKF.THALL in the Sottthwcht
is no longer the slow easy-going
non-contact game it once was.
Now. though one doesn't neces-
sarily have to tie a football play-
er he does have to be able to
stand tip to the rough treatment
of the game.
A pla.ver must expect to be push-
ed shoved pinched hit. slapped
scratched tripped elbowed nudged
stomped kicked bumped jostled
clobbered and "ndised or disciiRi
sed" frequently throughout the
basketball season This is just the
way it is.
The easy way as in living is to
give the old temper free rein to
just "fly off the handle" and hurt
yourself and your team.
The difficult and perhaps some-
times impossible thing to do is to
swallow pride and keep temper
well-concealed.
Foes thrive on this psychological
factor of the game. If a player dis-
covers he can make his opponent
mad he has found an important
weakness one which may bo a
tremendous factor in winning the
eamo.
