A 109-99 basketball victory
over Tarleton State College
Monday night in Brovsnunod
Coliseum marked an end to
the 1972-73 cage wars for
Howard Payne's Yellow
Jackets.
The win notched number 20
on the Blue and Gold's ledger
against only eight losses and
the Jacket roundball fans set
off an after-game festivity
that would cause a stranger to
believe HPC had just won a
national championship rather
than beating the last place in
the Lone Star Conference.
A cheerleader led the
crowdinachoruso'P'We beat
the Texans" as numerous
fans poured onto the playing
court jet somehow through
all the excitement a mood of
sadness reachedout to engulf
the group of students who had
gathered under the basket at
the north end of the coliseum
court
For those who had
witnessed four year's of
Howard Pajne basketball and
also for those who had only
taken up with the roundball
Jackets this season the
realization that the era of the
famed Jones Gang was over
seemed to turn the carnival
like atmosphere into one of
melancholy
Both seniors Tom and
David Jones had played
their final cage game as
Yellow Jackets. But it can be
said that the Jones Gang
kmms how end a career.
The; combined their scoring
talents for 62 points. David
tallied 35 and Tom 27 points.
