Stanford Jackson combine 85 years of HPU service

Payne University is not only set on
its history but also upon those that
serve ;is the faculty and staff Stu-
dents come and go but when a
member of the faculty or staff re-
tires ;ifter m:my years of service a
large void is left in the family of
HPU
Dr Jack Stanford and Don
Jackson have served HPU for at
least 30 years and have had a big
impact upon those that they have
touched.
"Inside the classroom. Dr.
Stanford was challenging" said
Jason Davis biology student. "He
challenged our ability to think. He
is a great friend to me I enjoyed
him as a professor but even more
as a friend and mentor "
Dr Stanford h;is been a part
of the biology department at HPU
tor 33 years and served as chairman
of that department tor about 25
years As a plant taxonomist he has
given much of his time and knowl-
edge to that subject The Howard
Payne Herbarium now holds over
30000 .sheets of plants tromall over
Texas the U S and other countries
In the 70's he wrote a book
called "Plants of the Texas Edwards
Plateau and Adjacent Area" and he
has plans to write a book called
"Ferns of Texas "
"I will keep an office here at
HPU and will work on the book
with Jim Blassingame" said
Stanford.
Yet Stanford will be missed.
"My favorite thing about
HPU is my association with the stu-
dents not only those that are here
but those who return to visit" said
Stanford.
Registrar Don Jackson has
been at Howard Payne for 30 years
and has taught biology was assis-
tant registrar dean of admissions
academic dean vice president of
academic affairs and dean of the
college of arts and sciences. He has
been registrar for the last 15 years.
"I have attended 104 "meet-
ings of the Board of Trustees been
responsible for 104 registrations
attended 52 commencements and
have served under five HPU presi-
dents" Jackson said.
Before HPU Jackson was a
high school biology teacher for 10
years. It was from another teacher
in the high school were he served
that he heard about HPU
"1 was interested in Christian
education and when I applied at
HPU the position was open" said
Jackson
"Without a doubt my favor-
ite thing about HPU has been the
people I work with" Jackson said
"These jire the best people in the
world-students staff and adminis-
tration "
