GUSTINE HOMECOMING QUEEN: Judy Livingston, was named
homecoming queen at the annual Gustine Homecoming last weekend.
She attended Gustine School from 1950 to 1952. She and her
husband, Junior, have lived in Gustine forty-five years. They are
owners and operators of Livingston Florist in Gustine. She has always
been very supportive in all community activities and an asset to her
community.

Melon Tour Planned
The Comanche County Exten-
sion Commercial Horticulture
Committee has planed a Melon
Tour for Thursday, June 12, 1997
The tour will assemble at the Co-
manche Community Center on
Hwy. 377 in Comanche from 9:00
a m till 9:30 when the group will
leave
The tour will include two hours
of continuing education credits for
commercial, noncommercial and
private applicators A sponsored
lunch will be served at noon on the
tour To preregister please contact
the Comanche County Extension
office at 915-356-2539
The Melon Tour will include
three stops The first stop will be
of a research plot in which mul-
ches are used in a permanent pas-
ture to grow melons This is part
of a sustainable agriculture project
that is a takeoff of strip tillage
done in field crops
The second stop will include
seedless melon production on
black plastic mulches and will
include a foliar disease control
demonstration This tour is set to
coincide with seedless melon har-
vest
The third stop will be of canta-
loupes grown on black plastic and
dnp irrigation A variety plot has
been installed there
The Melon Tour will include a
variety of speakers including Dr
Frank Dainello, Extension Vege-
table Specialist, Dr Nancy Roe,
Extension Horticulturist, and Dr
Chip Lee, Extension Plant Patho-
logist These speakers will be on
the tour to talk about various as-
pects of early production including
the many problems with insects,
disease and of course cold weather
this year

RETIRES AS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR: John Weaver (second from right), after twenty-six years
of service to the community as executive director of Comanche Housing Authority, is retiring. Judge
Weaver served as the Executive Director of the Brownwood Housing Authority for a number of years
before assuming the Comanche job. He and his wife Ann have both been active in the Rent Subsidy
Programs as well as serving as volunteers for various AARP and other training programs in Texas. He
is a past president of the Texas Housing Association and has provided a guidance and consultation to
many of the state’s housing authorities. Herbert Goodson, president of the City of Comanche Board of
Housing Commissioners is pictured presenting a plaque to Judge Weaver to commemorate his 26 years

Weaver as the Comanche Housing Authority Executive Director, and Archie Boyd (right), housing
