McMurry basketball coach
Hershel Kimbrell announced Sat-
urday that the Indians had signed
6' 6W' Johnny Ray Watson to an
athletic scholarship. The signing
brought a cease-fire to the recruit-
ing war that had raged around
the nll-stater from Lorenzo
Some 19 schools had bid for
Watson's services as a collegiate
player. In the past season Wat-
son led Lorenzo to the Class A re-
gional tournament while scoring
at a 27 point-per-game clip and
averaging 14 rebounds per contest.
Watson's cousin Deda Jones is
currently a freshman guard on the
Tribe cage team. Jones and
Watson joined forces to carry
Lorenzo to third place in the state
tournament in 1967.
The 17-year-old Watson will
bring an impressive set of school-
boy credentials with him when he
arrives next September. He is
the holder of eight school records.
Among those set in his three-year
varsity career: most points in one
game (47); most points in one sea-
son (988); most points in career
(2012); most field goals in one
game (22); best field goal percent-
age for one game (.917); most re-
bounds in one game (25); best field
goal percentage for one season
(.716); and most blocked shots in
one game (9).
Watson capped his high school
career by scoring 988 points his
senior year and being named to
the Class A all-state team. He
had made all-district and all-re-
