County-Wide Fight Against Rabies Aimed At Stray Dogs
Doing Fine
The first step In » county-wide
fight against the gfpwln* danger
of rabica was taken Wednesday
when about 80 city and county
health officers, civic and school
officials and Veterinarians met in
Houston.
Baytown’s city health officer,
Dr. L. W. Crossman, was among
those who attended the meeting.
Purpose of the meeting was to
map out a program of public edu-
cation to the danger and recom-
mendations to governmental agen-
cies, and to organize a steering
committee.
The basic program will Include
public educatioS, vaccination of
all animals and elimination of
strays.
The group recommended that
no dogs be sold out of city pounds
during this "emergency period.’’
It was pointed out that the in-
cubation period of rabies Is us-
ually from 21 to 28 days, and

than the rest of the state com-
bined. November’s tally in the
county was 75 mad dogs, compared
to 40 In all other areas of the
state.
So far this year 444 dogs have
been proved to be rabid through
laboratory tests, and the total for
1953 Is expected to top 500, an all-
time record. The total "positive
brains” during 1952 was 328, and
