CONCERT REVIEW
Loggins' concert high energy trip
By Linda Dailoy
Abilene rarely draws the excit-
ing quality performers that
Iargcf cities like Dallas or
Houston get but Monday night at
Moody Coliseum on the ACU
campus Abilene made up for all
its deprivation by bringing Kenny
Loggins to the music hungry fans.
The show was one of non-
stop energy on Loggins' part. He
opened with "Love is Come of
Age" then rocked through
several of his recent hits. He then
laid back a little and did a medley
of hits including "House at Pooh
corner" and "Your Mamma
Don't Dance" from his days with
Jim Messina.
Not all tradition
worth preserving
"It's a traditionl What is?
Almost every single thing at
McMurry."
Thus spoke the Totcta.
Homecoming always brings
about a higher consciousness of
tradition and its consequences.
Tradition gives us a link with what
went before and provides a base
to launch into that which goes
ahead. But is all tradition good?
Believe it or not. I tend to look
down on most tradition. But we all
have our hang ups. Custom such
as the Tipi Village encourage
reflection on our roots and those
events that went into history to
make us what we arc. However
some legacies pass down through
the years for the sole purpose of
molding us into a form that can
easily be manipulated.
Human sacrifice survived as
tradition for a long time but it is
not one I would encourage around
a college. Witch burning also
enjoyed some popularity as a
custom for a while. Of course
witch burning is not so far from
what happens to liberal arts
majors these days.
In my somewhat dubious

During the course of the show
Loggins encouraged audience
participation. They were more
than happy to oblige him.
The show did have one flaw.
The opening act. Singer-songwriter
Jack Tcmpchin did many of
his own tunes made popular by
the Eagles. Too bad he couldn't
sing. The crowd around me felt
the same way. They yelled and cat
called "Get a job Jack." He met
with the same scorn when he left
the stage after yodcling a ditty
appropriately entitled "Shut Up
and Get Me a Beer."
After rc-tcsting the equipment
Loggins took the audience on a
super-charged rock-n-roll trip.
opinion club hazing and initiation
arc to be questioned as to their
traditional motives. I have been
told that these activities help a
person fit into society but I
wonder if they do not just serve to
perpetuate oppressive attitudes in
our culture.
Certainly not all tradition is
bad but it should not be followed
for its own sake without thought
and consideration for its conse-
quences. If perchance anyone disagrees
with my viewpoint I would ask
that they please refrain from acts
of property vandalism. Neither
the school or I can afford this high
form of self expression.

The audience loved him and
wanted him to stay all night
especially after "I'm Alright"
which got even the ACU students
boogieing with Loggins and his
group. His first encore was the
newest of Loggins' hits "Don't
Fight It." He then came back for
"Keep the Fire Burning" and a
20-minute version of "Celebrate
Me Home."
The initial audience response
was greater than the performer
expected. He exclaimed that they
should have done a live album
here.
The concert was part of the
"High Adventure" world tour

Fall wasn't the same
without football in family
When you come from a family
with four football players you
almost have to like the sport. I
myself have developed a liking to
the sport since I grew up right in
the middle of four football
players. One of these four is my
brother Richard who is starting
offensive left guard for the Mc-
Murry Indian Football Team.
Richard is a sophomore here at
McMurry. He began in the fall of
1981. He did not play for
McMurry's football team last
year. He was told he was too short
for the offensive line and was
offered the defensive line posi-
tion but he refused it.
About this time last year when
Richard announced to the family
that he would not be playing
football wc were all a little
disappointed. But obviously wc
had to understand his reason-
ing behind it. The thrill of seeing
my brother on a college team was
suddenly demolished. But what
player can be happy playing an
unwanted position?
In his career in football
Richard always preferred the
offense over the defense. But of
course he did lack the height for

several tunes off the LP which
were well-received by the fans.
According to bass player
Vernon Porter the next stop is
Kentucky then on to New York
City and dates on Saturday Night
Live (November 13) and Radio
City Music Hall. After a rest at
home in L.A. the group plans to
go on the road again in January or
February.
Keyboardist Neil Larscn and
Porter both commented on the
audience. "We've been just
about everywhere" Porter said.
"Great!! Best concert we've had
as far as the audience goes"
proclaimed Larscn.
Faithful ACU co-eds waited
the position. He's about S'7" and
weighs about 210 pounds. "I
always felt like I had to work
double hard to make up for my
height" he stated. In a coach's

opinion a 6 footer or taller would
be better at the position.
Since my older brother Ruben
played defensive linebacker most
of his years in the career the
coaches seemed to want to com-
pare the two. But Richard kept his
pride. If he could not play
ofTcnsc he wouldn't play at all.
Richard's years in football were
successful. If he didn't achieve
first string position each year in
high school he always scemd to
work his way to the top. He

sPrin9 pre-r3gstration
to begin soon
Prercgistration activities for the
Spring semester begin November
29 and run through December 3.
Students need to sec their
academic advisors during this
week and pick up an approval
slip.
The registration process begins
at the Otficc of the Registrar
where students will pick up their
data forms. Cards will no longer
be used. Students will only be
required to fill out one form.
Students must then sec each
instructor (or member of that
department) whom they wish to
take a course under. The instruc-
tor must sign the form.
All courses at Dyess may be
registered for in room 201 of
Maedgcn.
Alter securing the signatures of
all the instructors the students
wishes to take he must return to
his advisor for final approval and
signature.
The next station will be to check
with the student services office
concerning housing. The form will
be initialed at this office. The
student must also have his form
long past curfew for Loggins to
emerge from the men's locker
room. When he did he had to take
two steps back and prepare for
lots of autograph signing. He
commented that he was in prac-
tice from the speeding tickets he
had to sign along the way. The
last one he was handed in Scurry
County (Snyder).
When asked how he had the
stamina to give such an energetic
show he commented that it was
what he did. "Like a basketball
player.. .I've been training."
If you missed Kenny I'm sorry.
You missed what will probably be
remembered as one of Abilcnc's
best concerts this year.
High School.
"Whether wc win or lose my
goal for each game is to do my
best" he added. At the present
time Richard is very happy with
his position on the team.
The family's only concern is
that Richard docs not get injured
since two of my other brothers
have had operations due to foot-
ball injuries in the previous years.
So far Richard first year anyone
would be proud to say that he was
on the starting line-up. And
besides it kind of feels good to sit
in the stands and actually sec my
own brother playing college foot-
ball. I feel that Richard has worked
hard enough for his position and
deserves the glory of his accom-
plishment. His major is coaching with a
minor in Spanish.
