Hi Indians!
How many of you arc ready to
go find a groundhog and ring its'
neck? According to the famousf
little animal wc should be having
Spring weather now.
Some of the weather has been
fine but that awful wind and
unexpected cold fronts don't
make Summer seem any closer. I.
guess the Abilene groundhog
must have seen his shadow this
year so wc still arc having cold
weather.
I'm in favor of finding all the
groundhogs in this area and
blind-folding them for next year!
By now pledging is well under-
way. Arc any of you sorry you
decided to pledge yet? Don't be.
It may seem hard and you might
wonder which will end first you
or pledging but it will definitely
be worth it all in the end.
I can't believe that it's only the
middle of Fcbruaryl It seems like
we've been back in school for an
entire semester already.
Actually wc have done a lot of
things in the five and a half weeks
that we've been back in school.
We've already had the delightful
experience of the Film Festival.
Wasn't it conducted well this
year?
We've also made it through all
the Rush parties and smokers.
That in itself is an enormous
accomplishment! We're almost
through with another round of
intramurats too.
Boy we've had fun this semes-
ter! Lots more things arc coming
up soon. The annual Phon-a-thon
starts Sunday. There's always a
bit of rivalry that goes on between
the clubs during that time. It's all
done in fun though; while at the
same time it serves a good
purpose.
Wc also have the Women's
Spring Presentation to look for-
ward to. There is a super drama
production coming up ("Romeo
and Juliet") that would be fun to
attend. The Jazz Ensemble con-
cert will be the 22nd. It'll be
really good too.
So sec wc do have some bright
spots ahead. Every time wc make
it through another killer-test
project or research paper wc can
breathe a sigh of relief. We're
going to live through all the
homework social events and
cafeteria food. Wc really will
make it to Spring Break!
Hang in there folks!

I was quite interested to read in
the last "War Whoop" about the
controversy over XO. If that is the
bfggcst worry the McMurry com-
munity has then we're in terrific
shape. Nevertheless I do feci that
the issue is interesting and impor-
tant enough to take a stand on.
I support Mr. Truong's and Mr.
Duran's formation of XO. The one
year penalty rule should be
revoked and they should be
offered the complete support of
the Intcrclub Council. My reasons
arc these.
First a club should not rely on
coercion in order to keep its
members. The one year penalty
adopted by Intcrclub is simply a
way to force club members to not
change clubs. Though it is often
used by society's organizations
coercion seems like a very poor
way to keep members in line

Dear Editor
Wc the women of Thcta Chi
Lambda wish to express our
feelings concerning the inade-
quate intramural program sched-
uled for the students last fall.
Through past experience and
through education in health fit-
ness classes wc have developed
competences in sports skills. Intra-
murals give us a chance to
exercise these skills and socially
be involved with our fellow stu-
dents. It is our concern that this
semester's programming be bettr
than the previous semester. Wc
don't want to jeopardize what
intramurals will be in the future.
Wc feel that student interest will
dwindle if creative programming
is not implemented.
Wc understand that the respon-
sibility of the intramural director
is great but wc feel that the
responsibility has not been car-
ried out to its fullest potential.
Certainly we the students of
McMurry want an active role in
deciding the course of our intra-
mural program but in order to
avoid scheduling conflicts and
deserves a chance
especially in an organization
designed to promote brotherhood
and friendship.
J
Second the creation of the new
rule at the time it was created is
certainly unfair if not illegal. The
rule was made to penalize Truong
and Duran after their intents
became known. No matter what

Club upset with intramural
coordinate facility usage wc need
faculty involvement. Wc realize
there have been scheduling con-
flicts between the varsity athletics
and intramural programs. Yet it
seems incongruous that the non-
availability of the football field
should determine the availability
of the tennis courts or the game
room or the horseshoe pit or
even the volleyball courts.
As recently as last week the
first women's basketball schedule
contained the omission of a team
to the schedule was willingly
made it resulted in last minute
hectic changes and postpone-
ments The second schedule
which should have been a round
robin tournament had some
teams meeting as many as three
times with no games scheduled
against other competitors. The
third schedule had the unfortu-
nate scheduling of women's
games at the same time as their
Rush parties.
The lack of interest on the part of
the intramural director has been
detrimental to the program and
caused the student body to suffer
the consequences of a haphazard-

Intcrclub's opinion about their
actions it seems highly irregular
to impose such an ex facto rule
after it was found that they were
violating no existing rules.
Third the idea of club hopping
is not a bad thing. There arc
already enough restraints (e.g.
pledging disapproval of former
club brothers) to prevent it from
occurring indiscriminately. But if
a person is genuinely unhappy in
a particular club yet desires the
advantages of belonging to a
club I sec no reason to make
things difficult for him. It has
been argued that if people can
switch clubs at will the secrets
and traditions of one club will be
"floating around out there with
people who become members of
another club." Big deal. These
secrets and traditions arc no
doubt important to some people
ly planned program.
In the interest of all concerned
wc write this letter with the hope

but they should never be ac-
corded a great importance than
the people in the club.
As a matter of fact I believe a
misplacement of priorities is at
the root of this whole controversy.
In the club structure it is
dangerously easy to lose track of
our priorities and place more
value on the club than on the
people in it. The opponents of Mr.
Truong's and Mr. Duran's forma-
tion of XO have begun to push
clubs to the point that they lose
sight of the people involved. Wc
must constantly remind ourselves
that clubs exist to serve people;
people don't exist to serve clubs.
If wc can learn to give the clubs
and club system the subservient
positions they deserve then wc
should be able to welcome XO
into the fold of social clubs with
open arms.
the attitudes involved will im-
prove during this Spring semester.
