On a cold January day some years
ago a University of California foot-
ball team took the field for a Rose
Dowl came that would moke history.
The game did not break records for
scoring attendance" or ''any oher
concrete reason but this game did set
a record for second chances. You sec
this team should never have been in
such a prestigious bowl game to begin
with much less still be clinging to
hopes of winning midway through the
game. But then it happened
Trailing by a touchdown a fircd-
up California defensive back Roy
Reigels picked up a fumble and
headed for the far end zone. It was
somcrun asheheoded for the goal line
spinning dodging andbrcaking tack-
les until he got into the open field and
then plunged in for the score just as
the pursuit dragged him down.
However Roy was puzzled for it
was his own teammates that tackled
him. In his haste to do something
right Roy had run the wrong way and
scored for the opponents.
The California coach stated he had
never seen a man cry as hard in his
life nor had he seen such an utterly
down player as was Roy Reigels at
halftime of that game. No one at the
Rose Bowl or on the team including

Mcntzos)
Roy expected Reigels to play any-
more on that of ternoon. But this coach
did the unexpected and left him in the
game after the half. Roy ployed like a
mari possessed that second half as
California won the game and Roy
'carncd13miration.
People this is the gospel of the
second chance we are all given every
day. He turned this second chance
into a golden opportunity.
Second chances are what sports
are all about and doesn't our football
team here atMcMurry deserve a sec-
ond chance and a third chance and a
fourth chance . . . every week.
Give them a chance in your heart
and your mind and you might be
surprised. Do not write them off every
week or put them down to make a
joke. The only joke is the person who
forsakes these athletes because they
represent you and me. They arc not
paid nor are they awarded scholar-
ships for what they do. They do it out
of love for a game and a school. Open
your eyes and read the jerseys every
Saturday night. . .open your eyes and
see the limps the bruises and the
casts every Sunday morning. . .open
your mind and ask if you could do it
for such a small reward Then tell me
if they do not deserve another chance
every week.
