Talk shows are a part of our everyday
lives. As we surf through channels in our
spare time Oprah Winfrey Sally Jessy
Raphael and of course Jerry Springer al-
ways have an interesting topic they are
discussing. What do the majority of us do?
We watch it and enjoy it. There are those
who pretend they are part of the live audi-
ence and start giving their own advice to
the panelists. In heated and controversial
issues I have done this.
Recently I have noticed that many of these
talk show topics have evolved to very odd
and incredible topics. For example "My
Grandmother Took My Man" or the one on
"My Mother Claims She's From Venus" or
"Cross Dressing Ex-Leaders Looking For
Attention." Granted some topics are infor-
mative serious and true but the wild ones
get ratings and are therefore more pre-
dominate. The problem comes when people actu-
ally start living by what they see. Viewers
start to become paranoid about those
around them. Many relationships can be
weakened when this gullible audience
jumps to conclusions about their loved
ones based on the tallc$hAW topic. They
shine! The Business Office
wants to be a part of this by
providing Christian leader-
ship and examples to those
weserve. Wehopetomakean
impression on the surround-
ing community that will lead
to new students. It is impor-
tant to theBusiness Office that
we become a tool that every-
one can use to help McMurry
become the finest small
church related institution in
the Southwest
Part of our role is to assist
students in their preparation

this lesson involves being re-
sponsible for yourself. It is
part of your growth process.

We all have an opportunity
to touch the lives of everyone
around us. The McMurry
University Business Office
challenges the other adminis-
trative offices on campus to
develop a mission and evalu-
ate the opportunities they
have. Webelieveithashelped
focus our office on the real
look for signs that their friends might have
similar problems or idiosyncrasies. There
are those impressionable viewers that be-
lieve ideas presented to them such as dress-
ing outrageously because according to the
panelists this is the way to express them-
selves. I have started to wonder where talk
show producers find some of these people.
I personally do not think that some of the
personal accounts are entirely true. How
do we know that these people did not make
up their stories just to get on national tele-
vision? Bored people could invent a sce-
nario that will catch our attention get them
on television and possibly give them a
vacation and something to talk about all at
the same time. The television stations like
this because they know people will watch
this type of show and therefore they en-
courage strange topics.
The more real talk show topics can be
useful informative and even enjoyable.
There are topics on national social prob-
lems helpful hints and those fun makeover
shows. The weird shows are fun to discuss
and joke about. However we must be
cautious not to take everything at face value.
Remember these people are either making
their stories up or they really have prob-
lems orboth.
