Notes

Photograph of 1103 S. Sycamore taken from the road. Photo was taken for the Historic Resources Survey of Palestine, Texas 1989-1991. This modest one-story dwelling illustrates how Queen Anne-style embellishment could easily be applied to an otherwise non-descript vernacular house form. The front porch, with its Doric-like columns, and the front gable end, with its jigsawn bargeboard, turned pedant and shingled siding, reflect the influence of Queen Anne style. Like many other properties in this late 19th/ early 20th century neighborhood, this house has changed little since its construction and retains much of its integrity. According to a local historian, this house was built in 1895 for local furniture dealer, William H. Kingsbury and his wife Pearl Foster Kingsbury. City directories not that, during the 1920s and 1930s, the house was occupied by a series of renters, including: Mrs. Etta Duncan, during the mid 1920s; and Rev. James C. Johnson, the pastor o the Second Presbyterian Church, and his wife Elizabeth, about 1935. By the early 1940s the house was owned and occupied b Mrs. Lucy Reed, the widow of W. P. Reed.
