Notes

Photograph of 1011 S. Sycamore taken from the road. Photo was taken for the Historic Resources Survey of Palestine, Texas 1989-1991. This one-story frame house demonstrates how the Queen Anne style remained popular in the residential construction of the early 20th century. Noteworthy elements include the bay window on the front wing and the porch with its Doric-like columns. Few alterations detract from the buildings overall historic character. According to a local historian, contractor J.M. Brashears built this house for Adolph D. Spaith, a native of Victoria, Texas, and his wife Onnie Ryan Spaith, in 1892. Mr. Spaith was the proprietor of a local meat market. Several years later, owners J. Eduard and Anna Carson Angly remodeled the house. Mr. Angly, a native of France, came to Palestine as a youth in 1890, and worked successively as a clerk for the I and GN Railroad, as the first manager of the Palestine Salt and Coal Company, and as president of the East Texas National Bank. The Anglys lived here at least through the early 1940s.
