Notes

Photograph of 605 S. Royall taken from the road. Photo was taken for the Historic Resources Survey of Palestine, Texas 1989-1991. This 2-story frame house is another good example of the Queen Anne style. The vertical emphasis, the jigsawn- and turned-wood porch trim and steep hipped roof are characteristic of the Queen Anne style. The only obvious exterior alterations are the partial enclosure of the side porches; otherwise, the building retains much of its integrity. Locally prominent architect and Ohio native Theodore Miller both designed and built this house. He later served as Supervising Architect for the U.S. Treasury, and designed the Old Post Office (or Federal Building) in Palestine. Frank B. and Carrie Markle were the original owners and occupants of this house. Mr. Markle was a traveling salesman. Later occupants included John T. and Beulah Sweetman, who purchased the house from Markle in 1920. Mr. Sweetman was a salesman, and later manager, for the Pearlstone Grocery Company, located nearby at 108 S. Sycamore. After her husband’s death in 1938, Mrs. Sweetman continued to live here until 1954.
