Notes

Photograph of 503 S. Royall taken from the road. Photo was taken for the Historic Resources Survey of Palestine, Texas 1989-1991. Although its porch columns appear to be replacements, this 2-story frame dwelling is indicative of the kind of pattern-book house erected in Palestine around the turn of the century. Architectural features, such as the asymmetrical plan, vertical emphasis and complex roof plan, reveal in influence of the Queen Anne style. Only minor changes affect the building’s overall integrity. Alabama-native LeGrande McIntyre built this house in 1899 for John G. Barry and his wife Clara. A native of Louisiana, Mr. Barry was a messenger for the Pacific Express Company. Later owners included Arthur W. Mead and his wife Kate, who lived here from as early as 1926 through at least 1941, according to city directories. Mr. Mead worked as a file clerk for the I&GN Railroad during the 1920s, and later was an engineer for Missouri Pacific.
