Notes

Photograph of 603 W. Reagan taken from the road. Photo was taken for the Historic Resources Survey of Palestine, Texas 1989-1991. Most of Palestine’s commerce and trade occurred in an area just north of the old railroad passenger depot and around the courthouse square. This property, which is in an old African-American neighborhood, is an exceptional example of a vernacular commercial building that retains its integrity to a noteworthy degree. The building, which has an awning that extends across the front, is one of the least-altered historic commercial properties in the city. This commercial building was home to several different types of businesses during the decades following its construction, including a drugstore, a meat company, and a warehouse. From the mid-1930s through the early 1940s, the Home Ice company, a wholesale and retail ice manufacturer (one of three such companies operating at the time in Palestine), occupied the building.
