Chapter of Alpha Chi have been

both the junior and senior classes.
A formal initiation of new mem-
bers will be held in the Chapel

All students and faculty members

Richard Weddige, who was
elected last spring, is serving as
president for the year’s activities.

Woodwind Group
Is Featured
The Woodwind Quintet of the
San Antonio Symphony Orchestra
performed for the faculty and
student body of TLC during the
convocation period last Wednes-
day.
Numbers ' on the program in-
cluded: “Quintet in C Major” by
Joseph Haydn, “Summer Music”
by Samuel Barber, and “Dance
Suite” by Paul Valjean, The lat-
ter two composers are contempo-
raries still active in musical com-
position.
The members of the ensemble
are: John Hicks, flute; Dan Stol-
per, oboe; Leland Munger, clari-
net; John Shults, horn; end'
George Schwartz, bassoon.
Each member of the quintet is
the principal section player of his
respective section in the San An-
tonio Symphony.
In addition to their active series
of engagements at colleges and
community concerts, each member
of the group is an instructor at
colleges and universities in the
San Antonio-Austin area.
This is the third season for the
quintet which is the only regularly
organized woodwind group in this
area.

Attend Chicago Meet
Pictures to Be
Taken Next Week
Class pictures for the Growl
will be taken October 5, 6 and 7,
as announced by Paul Mancuso,
editor. Charge for four prints (two
poses) will be $2, to be paid at
the-time the picture is taken. The
price of pictures has been raised
to defray added annual publica-
tion costs.
Men should wear coats, long
dark ties, and white shirts. Wom-
en should Wear a dark blouse or
dress.
Pictures will be taken from 8:30
to 11:30, and 1:30 to 3:00 in the
Growl office in back of the Ken-
nel.
Pictures will be taken in alpha-
betical order: A-H, Wednesday,
Oct. 5; I-Q, Thursday, Oct. 6; and
R-Z, Friday, Oct. 7.
Delta Pi Eta Elects
Officers for Year
The costume production for the
TLC players production of Hedda
Gabler will be the first project for
the Delta Pi Eta, homemaking
club, according, to Anita Richter,
club sponsor.
The newly elected officers of
the club are: Dot Treptow, presi-
dent; Joyce Fisbeck, vice-presi-
dent; Laura Landua, secretary;
Lynnette Bergen, treasurer; Kay
Thompson, reporter; Billie June
Lutz, historian; and Bette Nelson,'
social council representative.
Yearly plans for the club in- j
elude a party for the ag club, and I
i monthly supper meetings. I

Fellowships Are
Now Available
Dean E. B. Everitt has been
named the Liaison Officer to nom-
inate to the Danforth Foundation
two or three candidates for the
1961 Danforth Fellowships, ac-
cording to President Marcus Rie-
ke.
The Danforth Foundation, lo-
cated in St. Louis, Missouri, is in-
viting applications for the tenth
class (1961) of Danforth Gradu-
ate Fellows from college senior
men and recent graduates who are
preparing themselves for a career
of college teaching, and who will
enter graduate school in Septem-
: ber 1961 for their first year of
study.
Applicants are welcome from
the areas of natural and biological
sciences, social sciences, humani-
ties, and all fields of specializa-
tion to be found in the undergrad-
uate college.
The qualifications of the candi-
dates are: men of outstanding aca.
demic ability, personality conge-
nial to the classroom, and integri-
ty and character, including serious
inquiry within the Christian tra-
dition.
The maximum annual grant for
unmafried Fellows is $1500 plus
tuition and fees charged to all
graduate students; for married
Fellows, $2000 plus tuition and
tees charged to all graduate stu-
dents with an additional stipend
of $500 for each child. Students
with or without financial need are
invited to apply.

recommendations, must be com-
pleted by January 15, 1961. Any
student wishing further informa-
tion should get in touch with Dean
Everitt.

an Church, to be held in Chicago,
1 October 2-4.
Present at the meeting will be
the college presidents and chair-
men of the boards of regents of
the 10 senior colleges in the newly
merged church.
This group will meet with the
Board of Higher Education of The
American Lutheran Church to de-
| termine the educational policies
for the 10 church supported
schools
After the meeting in Chicago
j President Rieke will travel on to
New York City. There he will be
part of a group of 250 college
| presidents who will be the guests
.of the Independent Colleges Funds
! of America.
The purpose of this group is to
acquaint industry with private
! and church affiliated colleges, and I
| f° solicite donations from big
| businesses in th'e New York area.
Weigang to Serve
On Science Panel
Dr. Oscar E. Weigang, assistant
professor of chemistry, will be in
Washington, D. C., Oct. 7 and 8
to serve on a special panel under
the direction of the National Sci-
ence Foundation.
This panel will review projects
submitted by colleges to the Un-
dergraduate Research and Inde-
pendent Study Program.
The U. R. P. encourages under-
graduates to do independent study
in an established research pro-
gram.
TLC had an Undergraduate
Research Program on campus last
summer and will have one this
next summer to be followed by
more research programs in suc-
ceeding years, according to Dr.
Weigang,
Two Will Attend
Sponsors Meet
Miss Helen Weiss and Dr. Al-
den J. Carr will be in Austin next
! Sunday and Monday to attend the
state convention of the sponsors
! of Student Education Associations.
The purpose of the meeting,
i which is under the auspices of the
■ Texas State Teachers Association,
is to discuss the purposes and
j goals of SEA work in colleges.
Cast Is Complete
For Hedda Gabler
Casting for the fall play, Henrik
Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler, was com-
pleted last week. The drama,
sponsored by the TLC Players,
will be presented arena style in
the Commons on October 19, 20,
and 21, under the direction of
Louis Bittrich, English instructor.
Playing the title character will
be Nancy Creswell, junior. Cast
as her scholarly husband, George
Tesman, is senior Mike Jenson,
and portraying Lovborg, the man
from her past, will be Perry Price,
also a senior.
Junior Sherin Pfennig will enact
the role of Mrs. Elvsted, who has
inspired Lovborg’s regeneration
and watches him slip away again
under the influence of Hedda.
In supporting roles will be Lar-
ry Bremer as Judge Brack, a fam.
ily friend; Grace Wiederaenders
as Miss Tesman, the aunt; and
Lynne Hulsing as Berta, the maid.
Graduates Reminded
To File Applications
All seniors planning to gradu-
ate in January should file a de-
1 gree application with the Regis-
I trar’s Office, according to Lou
Olga Heye, registrar.
This should be done at the stu-
: dent’s earliest convenience in or-
der that Graduate Record Exams
may be ordered as soon as possi-
ble.
Phi Theta Kappa
To Add Members
The Alpha Phi chapter of Phi
Theta Kappa, national honor so-
ciety for freshmen and sopho-
mores, will initiate their new
members at a meeting to be held
soon, as announced by Hugo Gib-
son, sponsor.
Each year the upper ten per
cent of the two classes become
eligible for membership into this
organization.
Officers for the 1960-61 school
year are: Norval Kneten, presi-
dent; Anna Teggemann, vice-pres-
ident; Lynn Hulsing, secretary;
Virginia Fritz, treasurer; and
Linda Normann, social ""activities
chairman.
