a > The death roll at Sandstone haa
probably reached lta limit and presents
the awful total ot lt > seven This Is
not an estimate nor a guess but an
accurate count of tho bodies Interred
Not all were from the little villages
a few having been brought In from
the Immediate lclnlty There are here
Immense quarries employing In a busy
time a considerable number of men
work has been light but recently an
attempt has been made to Increase the
output and a large number ot men
had been called In for the labor that
was expected In the region and for
this reason It la Impossible to get nn
occuiule estimate of the population of
the place but a fair llgure ta prob-
ably SCO Many took refuge In the quar-
ries and Hume In Kettle river Just be-
low In a deep gorge where the Inst
t rn Minnesota crosses a bridge 300 ft et
long and 250 feet High Some of those
who were burned were caught on their
way to refuge and others were caught
In the village streets In one well four
persons died a death that must have
been a mixture of drowning and suffo-
cation and burning Today the well
wag utilised as a grave anl nine other
bodies weie placed In it and all coered
with earth Today two rescuing par-
ties were organized In Ilne City In
charge ot Jim lluner of North Branch
There were twentytwo men eleven In
each party One party went up the
government wagon road which was the
main road from Hinckley to the North-
east The others went up the iasten
road The party centering on the gov-
ernment road found no one The party
alonsfjvhe tracks found two bodies of
men mirecogntZLdly burned and with
lltllo about them to all Identification
This was the net result of the search
In Sandstone Tomorrow two otier par-
ties wilt go out In other directions
The country west Is heatlly wooded
with verj few clearings and little
water No report whatever has been
heard from the settlers and It Is feared
that all have perished
The Dululh rightotway and the
countr within a considerable distance
on both sides up as far as Mtunk Uike
has been scoured pretty thorouihl
A few bodies were taken out last night
and all tho bodies picked up Careful
si arch that was made revealed twenty
tight They were In un awful condi-
tion nnd could not bo handled only
with care Five children of the drccn
lleld family were so badl > burned that
all were put In a box designed for an
adult The mother and falntr wero In
Hlncklc and wer saved but their
famllj uud home Is wiped out ot ex-
istence The llobertson famllj of in a

who were reported jeslerdaj wero

horrible time that he vas one of the
few uho knew the fate of their Uied
onea nnd could bestow aotne sort of
care upon their remains lie came 10
line Cay and while mourning his vlfe
aa lost deoted himself to the practical
necessity of his occupation and the tare
of the two little ones spared to him
Today he learned that his wife waa In
Duluth With the Joy that this news
brings Is the grief of his little son lie
knows he Is gone nnd the uncertainty
that suirounds the fate of the two chil-
dren who vera with his wife for no
word cornea of them This Is but one of
scores of other cases that might be
cited where reunions haa taken plaie
between members of families ant
friends who haie each supposed the
other dead and that respect is only
notable from the duration of separa-
tion but Dan Donohue can hardly be
convinced that his wife haa not re
tumM from the grae
There is a prospect now that the
number of dead which ha > e been or
will be brought into lllnckles nnd
which has been hertofore consenatlie
lj estimated at about 200 will pass that
llgure The number of bodies now ac-
counted for reaches about that total
and of necesulty other will be brought
In or burled In the Mclnlti It la prob-
able that the number may reach 250
There Is one point where on Indefinite
number of bodies may be found U
Is west of the Duluth bridge across
the Grindstone and northwest edge
of the town where there was a mill-
pond of considerable depth ani prob-
ably 400 feet wide On the bank near-
est the town stood the plant of the
Llrennan lumber company and lta
jards with about a half million feet
of aawed lumber A number of lar
eons were seen working their way
to the water of the pond down the
alleys between the piles ot burning
lumber There is absotutell no basil
for nn accurrate approximation of how
many there were One thing Is certain
that no one who went Into It ever
came back to give nn account ot him
pelf or his companions To the intenso
heat of the burning lumber and the
suffocating volumi of amoke which It
alone furnished wjs added that which
went tip from the sawdust and edg-
ings through which the tire ran to
the very waters edge The water
was deep and those who wire thiro
when actively operated ror some time i probably chose death by drowning to
suffocation or burning The pond is
et unapproachable
j bank Is still1 full of fire
The sawdust
nnd as treacherous as quicksand
smoke Is so dnse that not even a sight
of the Hind can be 1 ad from a liolnt
bodies are
near tho place where the
euppond to be and It may be some
days before an attempt at recovery can
be made lrom Uruok Talk as the
