Henry Monsky feel that is the least courtesy that
can be paid to him for sticking to the Conference
ideal through thick and thin. Will the American
Jewish Committee and American Congress, tradi-
tional foes, unite to prevent that accolade to the
rugged B’nai B’rith leader?
Four Freedoms For The Home Front

Most talked-of producer in the radio industry is
Brownsville, New York’s Himan Brown, who is
responsible for six of the most varied and popular
shows on the air. He is able to put out a blood-
curdling thriller like the Inner Sanctum series with
its creaking door and crazy laugh and also the lib.
eral series of dramatizations in Green Valley, U.S.A.
which knocks hell out of all the fancy patriots.
Brown, who was one of the first players in Ger-
trude Berg’s “The Goldberg’s,” doing the role of
Jake, now turns out such “mellers” as Nero Wolfe,
Bulldog Drumond and The Thin Man. But
Brown’s favorite is still “Green Valley,” in which
his script writers describe for afternoon audiences
what the Four Freedoms mean in the life of Am-
erica.
The French aren’t the only ones who can’t agree.
There’s a parallel for the De Gaulle-Giraud situa-
tion between the World Jewish Congress and the
jewish Labor Committee. The Congress was
first to create a committee of French Jewish exiles
tt speak on behalf of the Jews of their homeland.
Now the Labor Committee has come along with
its own exile group. All we need now is for the
American Jewish Committee and B’nai B’rith to
show that nobody can put anything over on them
and create two more exile committees. Multiply
four different French exile committees by all the
countries in Europic and you get an idea of what
chaos is really like . . . Rumor has it that a certain
prominent Jewish cleric' made arrangements with

George Jessel has at last come into his own —
if the cup doesn’t again slip from his lip as it has so
many times before. Because of the great interest
aroused by his frank autobiography, “So Help Me,”
in which he laid all his cards on the table, the
slant-mouthed comedian has become a Hollywood
producer. They say that Jessel’s Yiddishisms have
already become a piart of the American language.
Time Magazine said of Jessel that he was
“Rousseauing his wild oats.” But now that he’s in
Hollywood, where the producers of great comedies
have no sense of humor, Jessel is still shooting his
mouth off as though nothing mattered except his
own gift for wisecracks. Jessel says the manpower
shortage is so acute in filmland that the studios are
hiring the relatives of other companies’ executives.

Jews" Out Of Government Service
New York (JPS) — Persons having “too many Jewish friends”
arc being turned down for government employment at Washington
as a result of investigations along these lines conducted by the Federal
Bureau of Investigation and the Civil Service Commission, according
to charges contained in an article in The Nation, liberal weekly, by
an author whose identity is not revealed but who refen to himself
as “a minor governmental executive.”
Among actual questions put to the writer by Civil Service and FBI
igators were the following:

Jewish friends?” — ‘‘Why do you
suppose he has hired so many
Jews.”
“Questions like these are being
used as a sieve to strain anti-
fascists and liberals out of the
government They serve no other
purpose," the article declares. All
workers in war agencies, it states,
are submitted to this “so-called
‘character investigation’” which
is "little if at all concerned with
a man’s character, loyalty, or
sympathy for domestic ideals and
forms of government.”
“Every day,” the article con-
tinues, “and sometimes four or
five times a day — because I am
personally responsible for the
woAt of three or four hundred
of my associates — an investiga-
tor approaches my desk, flashes
his credentials, opens a notebook,
and begins a routine that is both
blood-chilling and exasperating.
It is a sad display of confusion,
bigotry, and lack of understand-
ing of the war we are fighting.
We are engaged in a struggle to
the death with the fascists. Grand
juries have returned indictments
for sedition and treason against
many of their henchmen in this
country. Yet this city alone has
several thousand government in-
vestigators ransacking the town
for anti-fascists and using as their
t^ctbooks and tipsheets the propa-
ganda publications of the very
men and women now awaiting
trial on the most serious of
charges.”
As an example of the “stupid
prejudices and absurd evidence”
brought into play by the investi-
gators, the author cites the oc-
casion on which within a week
after "a rabid Southern Congress-
man described The New York
Times as a ‘Jewish Communist
newspaper,’ an FBI man asked
him whether his acquaintance
“habitually read the Times.”
NO JEWS IN SICILY
SINCE INQUISITION
Washington (JPS) — As United
Nations forces under General Eis-
enhower smash toward the Ital-
ian mainland by way of invading
Sicily, observers noted that there
were no Jews who would be lib-
erated by the Anglo-American -
Canadian forces, since Sicily has
had virtually no Jewish popula-
tion since almost a hundred thous-
and were expelled in 1492 by de-
cree of the King of Spain.
Synagogues, catacombs and
other relics of centuries of Jewish
living on the island are visible in
the major cities but except for
several hundred who tricked back
to Sicily in the last half century,
Jews stayed away from a once
hospitable land which drove them
out with the autos-de-fe. Since
Mussolini accepted Hitler’s “Ary-
an” code, even the small number
of Jews left Sicily.

or religion is stressed in the listing of four freedoms for which to
fight on the home front by Mrs. Franklin Delano Roosevelt in an
article in The New Threshold, publication of the United States
Student Assembly. Equal opportunities in the fields of justice,
education, economics and expression are urged by the First Lady as
a supplement to the four world freedoms named by President Roose-
velt, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom from want
and freedom from fear.
In her article, Mrs. Roosevelt demands:

assures us of justice without pre-
judice, for Jew or Gentile, for any
race or color, as far as human
beings can obtain justice.
“Equality of education for
everyone, because of the need for
an equal opportunity in life.
