Look at the results that must
accrue to the cattle interests of
Texas Suppose that the prices
realized at Houston should be no
greater than we now receive at
Chicago the average cost of freight
feed and shrinkage between Texas
and Chicago we will say is 8 per
head tre can certainly save two
thirds or in round numbers say
5 Mow long would it take even
this moderate increase in your re-
ceipt to reimburse you for the
stock taken in order to secure it
I or distribution to the markets of
the world your dressed meats will
be ss convenient at Houston as the
Chicago meats are at Xew York
the freight between Chicago and
Xew York being entirely saved

The failure of prohibition is no
reason that we should come to the
conclusion that no reform can pos
sibly be effected There is a rem-
edy and one too that the great
masses of out people will endorse
The majority of onr people are not
intemperate nor apologists for the
evils of drunkenness Thousands
of them hate drunkenness with all
their hoarts but they do not be
lieve that prohibition is the prop-
er remedy convince them of a rea
sonable plan to drive drunkenness
from the land and they will accept
it In my opinion the great evil
of dramdrinking lies in the re
tail system It is the public drink
ing of spirits sold under the li
cense system that breeds so much
eviL It is the sale of intoxicating
liquors by the drink that produces
so much demoralization There
never was a greater mistake made
or a greater wrong done by the
government than that of licensing
the sale of intoxicating liquors In
stead of checking drunkenness it
promotes it If it is wrong to sell
liquor by the drink it is wrong to
license such sale Every sensible
man knows that it is bad policy to
do evil that good may come or to
lo to

rcumstances will lation nt l10 outset in licensing

MTu union and if co6 evil of drunkenness

raising of revenue by prostitution
envious fail horrible Tho thirty pieces of
g > rator8 in BUver that secured the betrayal of
the Son of God was better money
than is the revenue that is now
raised by licensing the liqdor
traffic It is blood money and is
a curse rather than a blessing to
jjVfceding 8 fctate and is unlltto be put in

TfiTnever before to Purchase graveyards for crimi
nals and much less for foreign-
ers Away with it
I candidly think it would be far
better for our general government
to abolish the internal revenue al-
together and leave tho liquor
question with the state Then let
every person make and sell spirits
to utter insignificance compared that might wish to and that with
with the prospects beforo this on
out greater tax than is imposed
upon any other manufacturer or
dealer But tho Legislature should
absolutely prohibit the sale of
liquor by the drink any and every
where This would most effectu-
ally break down the saloons bar-
rooms and shops of every kind
Public 6etiment will endorse such
a law and there will be no trouble
in its enforcement Such a law
might not stop drunkenness alto-
gether but with prudent legisla-
tion it would drive it to a mans
own fireside or closet and parent-
al regard and maternal influence
would soon scout it from there
Bespectfully

The Mountains or Texas
BrWJ Wilsov
The surface of the earth is wise
ly diversified into hill and dale
mountains and valleys elevated
plateaus and some depressions so
much so that there is no vost ex
tent of land surface that is entire
ly without them and this diversi-
ty of the earths surface is the
cause of many natural advantages
to tho human race Xo State or
country can be said to possess all
the advantages of health and pros-
perity that is entirely devoid of
any mountainous regions within
its limits Mountains are always
surrounded by a healthful atmos-
phere and blessed with the purest
water and hence the general health

oat as scon as the moun-
tains aro penetrated by railroads
and made accessible the peoplo of
malarial districts aro seen flocking
to them eithef to settle permanent-
ly or to spend a few months dur
ing the sickly seasons of the year
This is known to be the case in ol-
der settled portions of the country
and hence the people of Texas
should feel proud of their own
mountains and regard them 3 be
ing tho most desirable and attrac
tive portions of tho State Other
localities may have greater produc
tiveness and may possess more
wealth but these without the great
er boon of health can nevere give
tiiiac satisfaction to any people
But if a mountainous region is
both convenient and accessible to
such peoplo then a temporary
change of climate for a short sea-
son will prove highly advanta-
geous and all persons who are at
all able to make such a chango
will be sure to do so Texas then

mays Texas Almanac 1885
It falls to the lot of the Sun this
week to chronicle a dreadful crime
and to report the loss of n valua-
ble citizen Late Saturday after-
noon Deputy Sheriff W J Stan-
ley who lived n little south of
Florence having understood that
his fence was down at a certain
place went out to put up the fence
and on the way he left a stake
rope ot the place where he usually
staked hishorse and which place
was only a Bhort distance from his
dwelling Having put up the
fence ho rode back about dark
staked his horse and had startep
to walk to the house when he was
fired upon by two men who were
in waiting for him He was shot
ten times being shot in the breast
and back and both legs and arms
being broken Two men who were
at Mr Stanleys residence took
pistols and ran out to where the
shooting occurred but when they
reached the place they found only
Mr Stanleys lifeless body As
speedily as practicable officers
and citizens instituted search for
and pursuit of the murderers who
passed through the western part
of the town of Florence and went
in a westerly direction At this
writing there is no intelligence of
the arrest of any one charged with
the murder Mr Stanley was a
well known citizen and a very ef
ficient officer His earnestness
and valuable services in plans and
endeavors for breaking up horse
stealing donbtless led to his being
most foully assassinated Shame
it is that a man who exerts him-
self for the protection of property
for which men have honestly
worked should thus be brutally
lolled by miscreants who have no
respect for properpy rights and
who to carry out their villainous
plans or to prevent their detection
do not hesitate to commit murder
Vigorous efforts aro being made
for the capture of the murderers
of this useful officer Georgetown
