Sheriff Report

associated with since 1931, 32 of

Delivered trap door of hanging
gallows to Freestone County
Museum where going to be in-
stalled and permanently
displayed in near future.
Lifelong friend Eston Turner at
the final rites advised that on the
morning of the only hanging in
this jail back in 1916 was a young
boy working for Ed Williford
Mercantile Store deliverying in a
small one horse hack and brought
200 lbs. of salt to the jail and was
used to test hanging rope and
gallows before being used that
afternoon. Executed was man
named Floyd Thompson con-
victed of murder and sentenced
to die within walls of County jail
anytime after 11 pm and before
sun set on Jan. 6, 1916. Execution
performed by Sheriff George
Burleson as Sheriffs performed
death executions until about
925 Turner advised Mr.
Williford also finished out
caskets and served as funeral
director for area

thought it was pudding and
saving for dessert. Trial before
jury in County Court of coach
charged with assault, verdict of
not guilty returned after full day
and trial in into night. Hooked
Buford up with bailifing when
short handed
Extensive search for 2 year old
boy who took his two little white
dogs on expedition into wooded
area where lives, located couple
hours later in fine shape quite
some ways from home by one of
several in search Mr. Clint
Mullin.
Harris Co. officers up to claim
property stolen in burglaries
there and recovered from stolen
vehicle abandoned on 145 after
chase by THP and other units
while back. Houston deputies
picked up one of two being held
for them on car thefts. Deputy
jailed one wanted Anderson Co.
picked up later. With Buford to
Mexia on theft of town stop sign
by youth there.
Called late one afternoon
recently by Big Buford to come to
Wortham as needed some help
with mental patient, advised be
there soon as could clean up
some, radioed back little later to
disregard as had taken care of.
Smelt a rat when called first time
and have since found out it
concerned mental woman
coming to see elderly mother and
giving her hard time, Buford
called and given such cussin told
woman going to have to lock up
and on way to patrol car woman
became so upset lost control of
bowels, found out that when he
called me, after few minutes in
patrol car and going to have to
wait for me he negotiated with
her to leave and not rfetum.
Corsicana meet on Weather

better equipment being installed
all time, very fortunate to have
such in area as could give war-
ning in time of possible or actual
tornadoes. On way back had to
run down DWI Slap in pursuit but
too far back. Complaint on kids
throwing rock thru trailer house

traveling FR 27 late one af-
ternoon on several youths in car
following real close for while then
passing at high rate of speed and
waiting ahead on top of car with
no clothes on, lady advised she so
shocked first didn’t believe.
Personally saw car and dudes
parked where happened but not
doing anything, too bad couldnt
have put on show for me. By time
received call unable to locate.
Man reports finding ladder on
US 84 Three runaways picked up
and held. Report on CB 2 am of
rocks being thrown at vehicles on
145 off overpass. Man picked up
on out of county warrant for bad
check. Sign and churchyard-
messed up by vandals during last
rain. Youth jailed after fleeing
from Slap.
Truck hit bridge 145, road
blocked with deputy assisting
THP, also had Navarro Co.
deputy come to rescue as badly
needed in directing traffic.
Received note from woman
keeping her daughters children
to please found her, as done
broke her leg and cant take care
of Hubcaps stolen from vehicle
stopped at cafe. Bus driver
complaint on youth in car
following and harrassing.
Burglary of Chevrolet dealer,
Fairfield with radios, spark
plugs, etc. taken.
March jail records show 109
committed during month. Three
year old Teague boy who wan-
dered away from home where
mother too intoxicated to take

assisted with security at Cen-
terville little dribbler basketball
game. Family dispute over use of
car. Report man walking road
with gun in pocket found by
deputy to be mental on furlough
and beer cans in pocket, held for
family until could carry back.
Complaint on 14 year old giving
mother bad time.
Weekend officers didnt have
much to report Friday night but
with signs right and weather
clearing Saturday and Saturday
night much different story.
Sixteen jailed putting em on floor
again included: man drunk-and
creating problem at anothers
home, drunk that nearly ran over
Game Warden Hunt, DWI the
THP got, DWI and drunk jailed
by deputy who also used service
station driveway for restroom,
drunk woman and drunk blind
man Buford hooked em up with,
and several on just drunk and
after hour consumption. They
also assisted two Grand Prairie
school buses broke down on 145
loaded with school band, also
carried them some drinking
water. Even had dog in jail when
no place else to put.
Young man doing jail sentence
on pot possession been typing and
indexing old criminal records
jackets, made deal with to
release when completed, his
typing and everything really
improved as spent some time on
it.

Cheryl Calame, Wortham FHA
President and Area VIII 5th Vice-
President, has been involved in
many FHA activities this year.
One of Cheryl’s first respon-
sibilities as an area officer was to
attend and participate in the
Area VIII Leadership Con-
ference, which was held in
Trinidad last June. Cheryl held a
workshop introducing FHAers to
Encounter.
In July, Cheryl and her ad-
visor, Mrs. Nell Jolly, traveled to
St. Louis, Missouri to the
National FHA Meeting along
with other area officers. Several
days were spent in sessions with
FHAers from throughout the
country. Of course there was
sightseeing too.
A few days after returning
from the national meeting Cheryl
traveled to Wimberly to par-
ticipate in the State Executive
Council. During this meeting
officers from each of the ten
areas in Texas got together and
made plans for the coming year.
While in Wimberly Cheryl
worked with other.area 5th vice-
presidents oq the state FHA
magazine, The Future
Homemaker.
In March the, Area VIII
Meeting wa6 held in the Waco
Convention Center. Cheryl
participated in the program,
giving a report of the monthly
FHA newsletters, including a
report of The Contact, the area
newspaper, which she prepared
as the October newsletter.

trustee election. Dowe Hall, Jon
R Jones and Curtis Jefferson. Jr.
were elected, for two year terms
In the voting Dowe Hall
received 179 votes. Mike.
McLelland. 140; Curtis Jefferson,
Jr.. 194; Gene Allen. 128; C.R.
Sutton. 134; Jon R. Jones 247 and
one write-in vote for Sam Carter.
Rufus Hall was elected county
school trustee at large. 301 votes,
with no opposition

Mrs. Bertha Craig visited her
son, James Craig in Houston last
week. They attended a
retirement banquet for Gulf
Corp. employees.
Mrs. Vera Bilton had as guests
last weekend, Mr. and Mrs. Jody
Shetter, Rhonda and Randy, Mr.
and Mrs. Fred Springer and
Phillip all of Deer Park, and the
group “Celebration”, from the
Deer Park Baptist Church, who
performed at the Wortham
Baptist Church on Sunday .
Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Benton and
family of Orange visited this
week with his mother, Mrs. A.R.
Benton.
Mr. and Mrs Uel Davis at-
tended a County Chairman's
workshop of the Texas Historical
Commission in Austin last
weekend and also visited with
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Biggar.
Norris Buchmeyer of Ft. Worth
is visiting with his parents, Dr.
and Mrs. N.D. Buchmeyer, Patty
and Gary.
Visitors in the home of Mrs.
Vera Bilton this week were Mrs.

One Act Play Wins District
The One Act Play is on it’s way
again! This past week on March
3lst, the Wortham One Act Play
competed in the district meet at
Corsicana.
Thanks to all who supported us
and a fantastic crew and cast we
came through with a victory.
Robert Keathley was named to
Honorable Mention; Mark Brown
and I,ance Niclmls made the All
Star Cast; and Larry Nichols was
awarded Best Actor.
The play will be Iraveling to the
Area Contest in Nacogdoches at
the Nacogdoches High School on
April 13, 1977. Performances will
begin at 3:30 in the afternoon, in
the high school auditorium. Back
us all the way!

area officer Cheryl enjoyed
working closely with Mrs. Norma
Parton, Area Consultant with
Texas Education Agency and
with Mrs. Nell Jolly, Wortham
FHA Advisor.
Cheryl has been very active id
school activities. She has been a
member of the Wortham FHA
Chapter for the past four years.
She has held the office of Chapter
Reporter for two years and is
Chapter President this year. She
las been a member of the Beta
Club for three years, the past two
years being elected Vice-
President.
Cheryl has been a member of
the drill team for four years. She
is presently captain of the drill
team after serving as a
lieutenant last year. Cheryl has
been a member of the tennis
team for four years, a member of
the track team for three years,
and a member of the volleyball
team one year.
Cheryl has participated and
won honors in U.I.L. Literary
Events the past four years. She is
currently serving as crew
member and understudy of the
One-Act Play. As a Sophomore,
Cheryl held the office of Class
Reporter. As a Junior she was
elected Class Treasurer, Class
Favorite, Outstanding Bluebelle,
and was awarded the Study Club
Award for an outstanding Junior.
As a Senior, Cheryl was elected
Class Treasurer, Co-editor of the
annual. Football Sweetheart, and
Miss Wortham High.

School Board
Meets
Results of the trustee election
were canvassed and approved at
Monday night's meeting. After
aedministering the oath of office
to the elected officials, the
following officers were elected:
Dan Moore, President; James
Black. Vice President; and Rudy
Milter, secretary. Mattie Stubbs
was appointed recording
secretary for the board meetings.
The 1977-78 school calendar
was approved. Classes will begin
on August 22nd and end on May
25. Teacher in-service and work-
days will be August 12, 15, 16, 17
and 18. November 7 and 14,
January 9, February 20 and May
26th Scheduled holidays are
September 5, November 24-25,
December 22-31 and March 27-31.
A report was given on the
House Educalon Committee’s
school finance proposal. Wor-
tham’s total cost of the foun-
dation program would increase
$34,300 over the base year (1975-
76 . Nexl year the district would
receive a (46,700 decrease in the
local fund assignment. The next
slate share would increase
$62,900. In 1978-79 the district
City Election
Results
Results of the city council
election held Saturday, April 2
were, Randy Goolsby and
Leonard E. Craig elected to two
year terms and Will ford McLeod
elected for a one year term.
The total of ballots was as
follows: Randy Goolsby, 231;
Leonard E. Craig, 164; Sue
Sandlin, 77; write-in votes for
Billy Simpson, 11; P.R. Culwell,
3; and Dean Eckhardt, 1.
For the one year term, Willford
McLeod 180 and Glinda Lee Hold
must grant a $23,400 tax relief to
the local tax payers.
Other action approved was to
pay the drivers education
teacher (6.00 per hour. The final
application for foundation funds
were approved and appointment
of equalization board members
was discussed.
Members present at the
meeting were Dan Moore, Rudy
Miller, Dowe Hall, Curtis Jef-
ferson, Jr., Jon R. Jones and
James Black.

at her high school, where she
