Elys Go Into the mountain and fetch ohvo
branches and pine branches and palm
branches Now the palm trco was very
much honored by the ancients It had three
hundred and sixty different uses Tho fnut
was conserved the sap was a beverage tho
stems were ground up for food for camels
ati

nndmats and baskets and the leaves rr were
carried in victorious processionsand from
the root to the top of the highest leat there
was usefulness The tree grew eightyfive
feet in height sometimes and it spread broad-
leaves four and Ave yards long it meant
usefulness and it meant victory uscfnlnoss
for what it produced victory because it was
brought Into celebrations of triumph And
oh how much we want the palm branches in
tie churches of Jcsns Christ at this time
A great many Christians dont amount to
anything You have to shovo them out of
the way when the Lords chariots come along
We dont want any more of that kind of
Christians In the church
The old maxim says Do not put all your
eggs into one basket but I have to tell you
In this matter of religion you had better give
Tour all to God and then get in yourself
Oh says someone my bi inoss Is to sell
Bilks and cloths Well then my brother
sell silks and eloths to tho glory of God And
some one says My business is to raise m
and carrots Then my brother raise corn
and carrots to the glory of God And some-
one says My business is to manufacture
horse shoe nails Then minufactnro horse

for the glory of God
TJsefnhioss Is typified by the palm tree Ah
we dont want in the church any more peo-
ple that aro merely weeping pillows sighing
Into the water standing and admiring their
long lashes In the glassy spring Ito wild
cherry dropping bitter fruit Wo want palm
trees holding something or God something
for angels something for man I am tired

It is worth nothing for this world and it is

Give me five hundred men and women
fully consecrated to Christ and we will take

Christian standard in ten years ten thousand

saysj go forth Into tho mount and fetch ouve
braneses end ptno branches and myrte
branches and palm branches and branchs of
thick trees Kow you know very well that
a booth or arbo made of slight branches
would not stand The first blast of the tem-
pest would prostrate it So then the bootn
or arbor nust hare fou stout polos to hold-
up the arbor or booth and hence for tbe
building of the arbor for thi world
we must bare stout brandies of thick trees
And so it fa in the Gospel arbor Blessed bo
God that we baTe a brawny Christianity
not one eteuy upset Tho storms of life will
come upon us and we want strong doctrine
not only love but justice not only Invita-
tion by warning It Is a mighty Gospol it is
an omnipotent Gospel There are the stout
branches of thick trees I remem-
ber what Mr Finney said in n
school houso in this State The Tillage
wse so bad it was called Socom and It was
said to have only one good man in all the Til-
lage and he waa called Lotand Mr Finney
preaching described the destruction of
Sodom and the preacher declared that God
would rain destruction upon His hearem un-
less th y too repented And tho people in
the achfv > thoTis9 sat and ground their teeth in
anger and clinched their fists in indignation
but before he wes through with Ids sermon
they got down on their knees and cried for
mercy while mercy could be found Oh it Is a
tnlghty Gcepel not only an invitation but a
7r rning an omnipotent truth stout
branches of thick trees Well my friends
what I Iiavo shown you hero Is the olivo
branch of p ace here is the pine branch of
evergreen Roapel consolation hero the palm
tree branch of usefulness and victory and
hjre are the stout branches of thick trees
Ww gospel arbor Is done The air Is aromatic
of heaven The leaves rustle with the glad-
ness of God Come into tho arbor I
weni put at dlffuruit times with a
fowler to the mountains to catch
pigeons and w8 made our booth and we sat-
in that booth and watched for the pigeons
to come and we found flocks In the sky and
Piter a while they dropped into the net and
we were successful So I come now to the
door of this gojpel booth and Hook ont Iseo
Cocks of socjsnying hither and flying thither
Oh that they might como like clouds and as

It Is pleasant to know that very many of
our churches all over the land are rejoicing
in an ingathering of new converts Ju t-
here begins a new duty It 13 not enough
that these converts be brought into the
c lurch That is really only the beginning
There is need that these converts theie
young Christians be trained Fer even
tuougb tho great mission of the church ia ln
struientally to secur the conversion of
fanners bcarcely less important is the work
of theedificatnn of the saints In other
words it is not enough to bring men into the
church but they ought to be trained Into both
symmntry and vigor of Christian chara ter
The tem encv however is for u to be con-
tent with getting converts into the church
A e ore inclined to think that then the work
Is dona And yet the fact I that ery much
remains to be done What a largp propor-
tion of the members of our churches are in
eGiu < nt They cannot b depended upon for
any service In the Judgment of charity
ttey an o b account d as Christians but
they do almost uoth ng to advance tho In-
terests of the Redeemers kingdom They
give very little and they put forth small
jKTSonal efforts They have a name to live
but they are dead
One reason for this state of things In them
is very likely that they w m not trained
into activity on tneir first entrance Inio the
rbrcU They were rejoiced over as so
much tom from the rrksof the world
But having been gathered into thechunh
they were left to t te care of themselves
The rejoicing was warranted but the train
ins ought to have cccompmied it
Practically the best thing to do Is to set
these converts to work each according to
hb capacity There is plenty of work to be
donoinany church There are abundant
opportunities of usefulae s everywhere te
k > us activity need by no means be con
fined to distinctively religious meetings
There I call for tne use of talents of every
sort in Christian service
What c great gain it willbefor tho church
of Christ in our Ian 1 if the thousands who
bavo recently become enrolled among its
active member thall bi trained into habits
of effective usfuiness1 Let them be k >
traiDoL Therefore let pastors and church
offlc re and all older Christians realize their
and address themselves to the

fThe unintentional disburbanco of a
religious congregation by discordant sing-
ing when the singef is concientiously
taking part in the services i riot indicta-
ble
In North Carolinas health inspiring woods
Lived the defendant poor in worldly goods
But full of grace an exemplary man
As ever lived since Methodists began
Upon acquaintance twas apparent soon
Nature denied to bun the sense of tune
And though the forest there with pine are
rich
Twas vain to him he couldn t get the pitch
In church he warbled with enthusiasm
Inf ecting exery hearer with a spasm
His fault was worsened by his holding on
After the other vocalists had done
And so in many a fervent winding bouf
He showed them linked sweetness long
drawn out
And with a voice stentorian he sang
Until the dim aisles of the tar woods rang
Not with the understanding but with spirit
As if he wished the heathen world to hear it
This made onehalf the congregation shout
AYith laughter whde the pious and devout
Were scandalized the wicked were dehghted
But all the good and sober were affrighted
Once the sad preacher had shut up his book
Declined to smg the hymn and angry took
His seat the ruling elder had refused
To preach because the music was abused
On one occasion when the Holy Ghost
Seemed brooding oer the expectant humble
host
A member asked the brother not to sing
Lest he should on the cause so sacred bring
Deep ridicule and he fer once complied
But usually he such requests denied
Avowing if ho hoped to win the prize
Not he but M
only must pray localize
And so whenerit came to singing psalms
That house was filled with miserable qualms
Untd at last the suffering congregation
Hod him indicated for the desecration
A witness being called with lungs inflated
The manner of his singing imitated
Producinginextinguishable laughter
That shook the court house to the highest
rafter
Convulsing Judge spectators bar and jury
Till some lay down and rolled m comic fury
This testimony wrought a quick conviction
But on appeal it met with interdiction
For there was no pretense that he intended
The worship to disturb bethought he blended
Most scientifically with the rest
In short he always did his level best
And so if he will sing there s no help fort
His church may discipline him not the Court
The prosecuting brethern went out sad-
At this intelligence it was to bad
Not only must they hear htm on the earth
But as he was a man of Christian worth
Sure of salvation with a godly leavwn
They must to all eternity m Heaven
List to that voice which all the saints would
drown
Of smiling Linkshaw with his harp and
crown I
But for the earthly past of this dire pest
I might one simple remedy suggest
Induce good brother Linkshaw to embrace
The ministry and then at least his face
He must to some fresh field once in three
years
Reluctant turn and spare the tortured
ears
Devoutedly to be wished for dispensation
The Methodist contrivance of rotation
