man a statement of counties that
have in ono way or another ex-
pressed a preference for Hogg and
Clark that San Saba is give as an
Hogg county It may be a Hogg
county and it may not but in what
way it has as a county expressed
a preference for Hogg we do not
know There are however some
men here who may think because
they are for Hogg that settles it
If our county instructs for Hogg
all right But until it declares for

News was received hero last
week that Prof David McAllister
of Milburn had been killed Tho
circumstances as we learn them
are that ho had hitched a horse to
a road cart and gotten in to take
a drive The horse became fright-
ened and ran away McAllistor
became tangled in some way and
was kicked battered and mangled
death following almost instantly
Mr McAllister had been living at
Milburn a long time and was well
and favorably known He was an
aged man perhaps fifty or more
Ho has many warm friends who
regret the sad accident
Aro you a careful wide awake
moneymaking people and are
you willing to devote a little time
to listening to arguments and if
strong enough will you yield and
be convinced Or are you one of
tho kind who does not have time
to read and look into the truth and
facts that aro undeniable in either
case ive want your ear for a brief
period We believe a great num-
ber of good conscientious people
aro a little set in ther way of buy
ing goods and tis a hard matter
for them to change their
mode of buying Many of you
have a friendly pleasant and per-
haps a good house to deal with
and you follow in the same old
rut This is clever and big heart-
ed of you encouraging to the head
of the house you trade with San

Until 1830 San Saba county formed a
part of tho 7th judicial district but from
the rapid increase of population in Texas
a rcdistricting was made this year and San
Saba was placed in tbe 17th judicial dis
trictAt
At the general election this year held
at San Saba all of tho inenmbents both
district and county were reelected with
tho exception of sheriff and assessor John
Harmon was elected sheriff and Elija
Estep assessor The county could boast
of bnt one Notary Public Thomas Patter-
son Ho was not known to tho State De
partment but was presnmed to havequal
ificd in his county
It was during this year that the connty
issued ber first marriage license They
were issued by Geo B Cook deputy county
cletk to James L Latham and Martha
Ann Conch
Tho following figures aro taken from
San Sabas census report for 16511 White
males over 13 yearn of age 15 white
males over 18 years of age 167 white
males under Id years of ago ldl white
females over 18 years of ago 1G7 children
of both sexes under 18 years of age 301
children of both soxes under G years of age
29 qualified voters ltS insane 2 Pnpils
in school 0 acres in corn 1337 acres in
wheat 722 acres in cotton fcO total No of
acres in cultivation 2139 Thongh these
figures aro not large when w take cir
cumstances into consideration we find
that they show remarkable thrift for a
county not yet four years old
The history of San Saba for the next
Bixyears shows a constant struggle for ex
istence Yet that cheerfulness and energy
under misfortune which form such strik
irg traits in the character oi her citizen
did not at any time desert them
Early in the year 1661 Texas passed tho
ordinance ofsecession and San Sabas lot
was cast in with tho fortune of the confed
erate States of America
Soon after tho secession ordinanco was
passed by Texas an order for an election
throughout the state was made by the
Congress of this state In this county
both district and connty officers were all
rilled with new men
We find that Geo B Cook was the only
man qualified as notary public at tbis
time
Texas beiug a border stato she was in
1602 put under military rule Military
rulo at best is a despotic rule Tbo mil
itary rale forced upon tbo subjects of Con-
federate States though perhaps as somo
very wise statesmen have contended was
needful yet it was as no one will ueny
very oppressive These were days in
which mens souls were tried First
The Conscript law which compelled all
male iiersons between the ages of sixteen
aud fifty j ears to go to war When their
country commanded they obeyed Te
them no higher law was known Perform-
ance of dnty constitutes a brave man
This law left thousands of the border fam
ilies defenseless against a savage foe a foe
whoso greed for plunder and white mens
blood was insatiable Second The prohibi-
tion of tho exporting of cotton except by
government agents San Saba countydid
not at that time produce enough for
home consumption we manufactured our
own cloth in those days and of course
she had little or none to export conse
quently this law had no direct effect on
this county Third the Indians From
these fiendish rascals San Saba county
suffered much and long As yet being on
the edge of white civilization aud at the
period it v as too the Indians every moon
made their descents upon the settlements
plundering aud murdering as they came

ALLIAXCE COLUMN
We are now buiy with weeds tryin to
get them under control for thev have got
a start on us siuco the rain but tbe corn
is growing as well as tho weeds Wheat
is doing fiue judging from appearances
Oats aro v ry fino Our oats will make a
good crop without any more rain I think
wheat will to corn will need moro rain to
mako a good crop Cotton is backward
on account of being planted late aud so
much rain and so littlo sunshine but it is
doing better than the prico prospect justi-
fies Broom corn is small for the season
on account of having to plant tho second
time Tho late frcezo killed first planting
hut it bids fair to mako an average crop
but will not maturi till tho hot summer
sun which will bo 3omo drawback to its
maturingwell and will necessitate more
caro in harvesting I hear somo say that
corn w ill bo worth 23 cents per bushel in
tho fall but I believe they anticipatobny
ing and in that connection it would be in
their favor
It appears that A Democrat who writes
or did write for the News is chock full of
advice to tho Third Party and seems to
think that thero is no need of a Third
Party and that it is eveu dangerous too
He says tho democracy have pledged them-
selves to free silver Tho democratic par-
ty offers you free eilver and tariff reform
What more do you ivantT Well there is
truth iu tho above words but tho people
have been deluded by tho promises of and
nothing more until they havo been forced
to action as was the blacksmiths cat that
conhl not subsist on obligations and it
saw that it was timo for action it must
either break the cord that bound it to the
anvil block or starve to death Thofablo
says that the blacksmith had been doing
work for his customers and when they got
their work they wonld tell him that they
were lunch obliged until ho was better
paid and ho procured tho cat aud bound
it iu the 6hop and when his customers
got their work and paid lim in obliga-
tions hegayo them to tbe cat and nothing
moie to eat w hich made the cat to make a
resolve Th third party advocates have
mado a resolve which has been forced np
on them and Bro Democrat appears to bo
familliar with tho circumstances and op
osition that the farmers and others have
been laboring nnder the last 20 or more
years and knows too that every 4 years
sinco lcCG it has been tho same old song
or at least a song sung to tho same tunc
and the chorus invariably ends in a plea
yet elect democrats to congress and senate
and they will givo ua relief but tho cords
are just gradually binding us tighter and
tighter to slavery Wo believe is time
for actiou to procure freedom from money
rule for money is king in in tho old or
democratic party as well as tho republican
party So if a democrat wont help in the
fight just dont help thecrushisall wo ask
and ho will see one of the most determined
struggles he ever saw I can say that tho
third party has mado Texas its homo and
is going to make itself at home and is de-
termined to boo its row
As the commissioners court has failed to
givo Chinacreek an acccptablo way to
the lower bridge wo aro glad that Mr
Wiley Williams and others are so kind as
to allow Chinamen to go through their
premices for which we heartily thank
them and I think all will shut and fast-
en tho gates when they go through them
which is only right

Frontiers answer in the Sau Saba News
oCMay 13th to your correspondents first
question is answered by asking another
and I suppose ray answer to his querry is
his answer to my qnerry Frontier s ques-
tion What do you think of a Camphellito
preacher who said he would baptize a few
converts beforo diuner but owing to
threatuing yveather changed his mind and
baptized them after dinner
Well I think Camibell ought to have a
reckoning with his servants neglecting
Campbell s business on tbo account of his
fthe preachers convenience aud appe
tite
So Frontier s answer abont onr servants
in congress on tho tree silver bill is wo
ought to have a reckoning with them for
neglecting their duty on account of their
convenience and appetites for dinner etc
Second question Yv hat is the difference
between the genuino Hood of a liou and
aud the blood of a genuine liou
Well the blood is tho life of the lion
now if the blood becomes impure what
about tho purity of your lion Piinciplcs
of democracy are tho blood life of it
What about y our democracy of to day Ac
Now honestly old friend Frontier dont
you think our public scrvauts as they call
themselves need a littlo liver regulator
about now to purify their blood JLc
It seems to mo iu democracy tho pcoplo
ought to govern but what is called de
mocracy is a few wiro pulling manipula
tors governing the people a13 ing who
shall and who shant Why sir sometimes
about elevcumen in a connty seat will gt
together in a mass meeting and select
themselves delegates to a convention to
select a candidate for all tho people to
vote for and call themselves tho democra-
cy and if you fail to support their nomi-
nee you are a mossback renegade and an
enemy of tho pure priciple of the old timo
honored democracy of our fathers when if
wo know our little self we aro a democrat
to the end of our politics aud we think tho
old democracy is about ended and that
ends onr politics aud we will have to sing
Josselyn hymn
Gone aro tho men ofnoblo heart and brain
The great republics founders all iu vain
Wo scan the spreading empire to behold
A single statesman of the days of oldL
A single pattiot whose only aim
Ilia countries welfare and honest fame
The love of money is the cause
