Workmen are putting the finishing
touches on the White llorse Inn a re
Ereduction of the hostelry made
imous by Dickens stories It stands
near t e elevated road In the south
end of Jackson park and close to the
agriculture and assembly halL
The Inn is to bo th < terminal point
of a stage line from the city to the
Exposition The coaches of English
pattern drawn by fourhorse teams
will land their passengers along the
boulevards and through Wasninglon
park to the grounds where they will
find English maids serving the sub-
stantial and drinkables that are sup-
posed to be jreculiary British
Over the main entrance of the inn is
the old sign of the original house a
lifeslie figure of a white horse A
nide hall leads into a square court
around which at the second story runs
a rustic balcony On the left is a bar-
on the right the restaurant and directly
back is the kitchen In both bar and
restaurant are large brick fireplaces
with figures from Dickens w orks over
the mantelpiece
The second floor is cut up into small
rooms for private parties and tables
will be placed all around the balcony
which commands a beautiful view
Aside from the figures over the fire-
places there will be but little decora-
tion The woodwork overhead in the
rooms has been stained a very dark
color in imitation of oak An inner
court extending to the topof the build-
ing is to be used asan indoor refectory
A near neighbor of the inn is srn old
windmill with wide flapping sails
queer weatherstained uprights and a
general touch of Holland about it that
makes one expect to bee a stork some-
where close by For over two hun-
dred years this mill was used by the
famous Dutch cocoa firm Dc lllookers

Holland is a land of windmills but of
all the mills the lllooker mill is the
most famous not only for its age but
from the fact that it was the starting
polntof fame and fortune for a family
whose name it bears
The entire structure v s taken down
and is cow beintr put up again just
t back of the agriculture annex The
mill is make of wood and so hard has
it become with age that it is almost
impossible to drive a nail into it In
architecture it is veryquaint The few
pieces of machinery used arc primitive
in their design but so substantially
made that it seems good for another
century or so The hub of the wheel
on which the long arms are fastened is
a heavy block of wood almost as hard
as iron

Glass Jars for Tinned Good
So many injuries to health have hap-
pened and are constantly happening
from the eating of tinned meats and
fish that some of the great Canadian
and American companies have decided
to substitute glass jars for tins hith-
erto used The wisdom of this decision
is questionable seeing that a new
danger is substituted for an old1 one in
the form of liability to injury from
chipped pieces ot glass as proved by
the use of glass jars for jams Would
not stoneware prove more suitable fcr
all such purposes

A French doctor wants to introduce
his patent process of preserving the re-
mains of the dead It is not embalm-
ing them nor yet mummifying them
though the bodies must be embalmed
before the doctors new process takes
hold of them The new idea is to
electroplate the whole body and thus
preserve to posterity the noble linea-
ments of those whose estates cut suf
ficiently well to allow the expense
First the body is embalmed after
which it is dipped in a bath of nitrate
of silver It comes from this bath the
color of polished silver After that the
face is subjected to a regular electro-
plating dip and comes out burnished
copper ready to bo preserved to tho
latest generations In order to insure
perfect success the face is varnished
and this is the last operation The
burnished copper face is then war-
ranted to remain the same for centur-
ies if treated with reasonable good
care
