The Glorious Fourth has como
and gone but memories of pleas-
ure lingering behind San Saba
came to the front with the biggest
barbecue and picnic over known
in the county As almost every-
body was there it is useless for us
to say more However it was a
big social gathering and as a gen-
eral thing most everybody enjoyed
the occasion The welcome ad-
dress was delivered promptly at
10 oclock by Col G S Jones who
in a few words told of the glorious
event celebrated on that day A
National air was then sung by Mr
W J Wilson Dinner began at 11
30 and by lpm over 3000 people
had satisfied their hunger nnd were
prepared to enjoy tho evening
W E Alexander took tho speakers
stand at 230 aud entertained a
good crowd for an hour There
being no entrances for the tub
races the matter was deferred
and the sack races took place at
tho appointed time First prize
was won by H B Winslow second
by Eiley Armeutrout and third by
Zeb Eogers Tho base ball gam
was called on time The Union
nine with E Hoyden Captia ver
bus the Eichlnnd nine with W C
Hollister Captain and J W Neop
er Umpire The game was well
played and the prize was won by
tho Union nine Mr Joe Cun-
ningham also presented the win-
ning club with a splendid ball In
addition to representations from
our various adjoining towns and
counties Austin Houston Gal-
veston and Dallas were represent-
ed The crowd has been variously
estimated from 2500 to 4000 Tho
majority of estimators however
place tho number over 3000
There was plenty cf dinner for
ovorybody and some left over
The music furnished by the brass
band was good and helped consid-
erably to mako tho occasion more
pleasant still Tho crowd was
perfectly orderly and tho day was
ivell spent Tho day closed with
a hop given by our boys at tho
court house at which there was a
good crond of those who love tho
merrygoaronud Tho whole was
a gmnd success and our people nre
well pleased
