Ft. Worth Rests with Chess and Study
Photos on this and accompanying page offer interesting contrast in rest period recreation at Convair SD and FW. All were taken
at random during rest periods. They do not show all activities, by a long shot, but most popular as well as the unusual. Ft. Worth's
most widely followed luncheon sport is washer pitching,. More than 1,000 participate daily. It is similar to horseshoes. Ringers are
scored by throwing washer through hole in box. At SD horseshoe pitching is closest to universal sport though midget plane racing
draws biggest single crowd. At both plants, however, leading, indoor recreation for all is that American institution: the bull session.
SIZZLED OVER—Paul Whisenhant, FW Engineering (Dept. 6), shows how to skim the net in
lunch-time game of ping pong. Ball is stopped dead by fraction of second film exposure.
SERIOUS THINKERS—Chess absorbs Terry Clark, H. H. Hamilton and Bill Rector (Dept. 6 FW)
at left above while at right C. A. Edwards, H. Lawler, M. O. Murphee and W. E. Brandenburg are
absorbed by dominoes.
TENDING THEIR SEWING—Theola Bounds, left, Production
Control, (Dept. 22-4), and Thelma Linehan, (Dept. 22-3) embroider
after lunch.
READY, AIM, THROW—Pitching washers is a favorite noon-
time sport of many Convair FW workers, including R. W. Sechler,
left, and T. E. Montgomery, both in Outer Wing and Engines
(Dept. 47).
DEAL ME IN—An after-lunch game of bridge is popular with (left to right): Cantrell Hayes, Mrs.
Jerry Barnes, just playing a card, Tom Brewer and W. W. Hill, all of Engineering (Dept. 6).
RESTFUL RECREATION—Caught napping under newspaper is
Fred McDowell, FW Major Assembly (Dept. 46). Noon-time siestas
are popular though few share Fred's disregard for cement floor.
Cohu Main Sneaker For FW Foremen
LUNCH 'N' HYDRAULICS—Convair FW Field Operations (Dept. 61) crews such as these are
typical of scores of employees who voluntarily take their lunch period (on their own time), to learn
more about their jobs. Here they're getting pointers from J. H. Fewell, foreman. Also serving as
instructor for group was Robert Woboril, Engineering (Dept. 6). This was first such volunteer group
to study on employees' own time. Fewell reports that by end of course, "squawks" written against
hydraulics work of these employees decreased by half.
LaMotte T. Cohu, Convair
president and general manager,
will make his first apearance be-
fore the Convair FW Foremen’s
Club at the November meeting,
L. H. Allen, president, announced
this week.
The meeting at which Cohu will
he the principal speaker will be
held at 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 14
in the Blackstone Hotel. Dinner
tickets are available for members
through departmental clerks.
