A COUSIN OF HARDIN.
Brown Bowen another rising
young desperado who was banged
in Gon2alc8 county about 17 years
ago was a cousin of John Wesley
Hardin. He was born and reared
in Gonzales county and might
have become as noted a desperado
as his cousin had not ho been in-
terfered with by theshcriff.
Bowen belonged tp a gang of out-
laws of which liarUlh was a sort of

of not being in full sympathy with

recorded that early in the day he
was carried out and left leposing
peacofnlly in the shade of a tree.
An account of the affair publish-
ed shortly aftor saysi
"Bowen left tho stoVo. approach-
oil tho drunken man who still lay
under tho tieo and deliberately
shot him through the head. A boy
named Mac Billings who was
coming up. to the Ktoro leading
Bowen's lioreo that had had got
awav wan a witnrss to the deed.
'Here's your nos Col. Bowen

'That's right sonny)1' responded

hitch to a tree and tomember Ii s

"Bowen leturned to tho stoic
where for several bourn he was the
gayest of the gay. But tho litllt
boy pondered over these thingt and
laid them up in his mind; and
when he subsequently got a chanco
on tho witness-stand he told his
story with such directness that tho
the jury found the prisoner guilty
of murder in th fiist degree. v
"Brown Bowen was airested'aiid'
put in jail at which ho waB very
much chagrined. His fnends
thought that tbia was probably a
mare formality! to they waitod fm-
a weok or so expecting the sheriff
to apologize and make Bowen his
deputy as a partial leparation; but
in this they were very much de-
luded. The public had come to tho
conclusion that it was time for
them to offer Brow n Bon en and his
crowd somo incentive to behavo
themselves. Even tho rao-t pecc-

Haidin and his men did not soem
to have been woll acquainted with

were under no legal obligations to
