Ky between Houston and Gnlvcs
ion is not settled yet it appears
Charges nnd countercharges arc
m mode with each passing day How
long O Lord I how long
Wo trust the conclusion of our
Austin correspondent as to the
school question is erroneous Wo
hardly think the Convention will
fail to settle the question in favor
ofa vigorous and effective sys
tem Ilowevera few days will tell
the tale
There can be no adequate excuse
urged for the delay exhibited by
the Convention because every day
spent in haggling nnd jowering o cr
immaterial points but adds I-
to the growing deposition among
the people to complain at the waste
of time and monoy Fin it up go
home and let the people adopt it
We are indebted to the Secretary
of the Salado Fair Association for a
premium list of the third nnnual
fair to be held there on the 211th
instant This exhibition will be be
hind neither of its predecessors in
interest and will bo an honor to
Bell county judging from the very
hasty and incomplete examination
we have been enabled to give the
list of premiums
Col Flournoy of Galveston has
won the good opinion of the peo-
ple of the entire State by his manlv
liberal course upon all great ques-
tions of State polity in the Con en
tlon The people of Texas know
how to reward their faithful public
servants and no people on earth ex >
ceed them in gratitude It might
be a profitable thing for others to
do to remember this trait as a Tex

The Telegraph when speaking of
the rumor of a coalition between
the Grangers and Radicals in the
Convention is neither logical nor
consistent as the extract we give
hows The Telegraph on numer-
ous occasions has assumed to speak
for the Grangers and when an oji
portunity comes for it to refute a
base slander upon the Order it is
content to make the following co
vert attack upon it
Thf publication jf report mrrent la
Austin that an alliance offcnslro and defen-
sive had been formed between the Grangers
and Radical In the CobtcoIIod in pur
asance of which they were to exchange
Totes teems to have spruce a mine In that
body General Whitfield rises to ajr that
he know nothing of such an intrigue and
Mr Lynch avoir his belief that the Grange
baa nothingto do with politics Both gen-
tlemen doubtless nttered the truth aadet
It U singular that neither they or an other
member pronounced of their own know
edge the reports to be unfounded
The largest measure of liberty
consistent with the well being of
the citizen and the safety of the
State is a fundamental principle of
the republican plan of government
The obligation to defend a govern
mint implies the right to a voice in
such government The defeat of
i the poll tax provision in the Con-
vention was a righteous dispose
tion of the matter and we trust it
will be long before such arjothcr at
tempt will be made to debar the
poor from the ballotbox It is
i that while the rich ha e all
the money the poor have most of
the patriotism With a good free
school system in practice for twenty
one years an intelligence qualifier
tion may be insisted upon but
while our form of government
mains as it is no property or money
qoalincacion can safely be adt oca

Wo aro really astonished that tho
crary charge of Ibe Statesman of
much
October 8 should crcato so
stir both in and outofiho Convcn
tion Every one who has read that
Jtwelva 5inonlhs
paper for the last
wonders at its vagaries Somoof its
follies have been sublime and men
only arc astonished at the height to
which thoy vault No calm reas
oning being ever docs anything
lnoro than wondcr aud perhaps
smile when this rickity affah props
tip its position before Iho Teja pub
Ho with such follies as its recent
charge that tho Grange and Re-
publican elements In the Contcn
tion hae combined to force a con-
stitution tqion the State unworthy
of Texas and the civilization of tho
In one wty its objects are sen eil
by these unworthy means it keeps
itself before the public by them
whereas if left to its ability or pa-
triotism it would be forgotten long
ere tho ink had dried with which
the base stnh iswritten
Now wo have complained at tho
tardy action of the Contention we
are of the opinion that valuable
titno has been wasted and we com-
plained at the delay which has nnd
whichetidentlywill yet character-
ize the labors of the body we are
considering and w hilo we hate Rad-
icalism with a dcioutness to which
the Statesman is an entire stranger
no thought of blaming liem for the
delay ecr entered our mind
We have deprecated in advance
the disposition to cut down tho sal-
aries of public officials to n point
below w hicli ablo and devoted mer-
it will refuse to labor and the
Grange notwithstanding its well
understood policy of retrenchment
and reform has sustained us in our
position and the Statesmans charge
that the reduction was duo to
Grangcrism and Radicalism is en
tirely gratuitous and utterly un
founded
Wo do not know that there is a
single Granger present in the Con
entioniu that character and if
there be any there who assume to
speak for the Grange upon any
question he is iolating his honor
and exceeding every legitimate in-
fluence contemplated by the Order
There arc Democrats who are also
Grangers in the Convention they
are thereby reason of their Democ-
racy and not because of their
GrangcrUm and this littlo attempt
to drag tho Order into political
strife and a miserable poltlcal asso
ciation is so rediculous and
displays such a sublimity of
effrontery and selfsatisfied men
dacity as to entitle it to the encore
which any other deter farce would
rece ne from a Bowery audience in-
n tenthrate dance house
To charge the Grango with what
ever faults the Com cntion has or
may jet commit is a gratuitous in
jury and an injustice which the
mass of the people in tho State will
repudiate with scorn There are no
more farmers in tho Constitutional
Contention than there were in the
Fourteenth Legislature or indeed
any other excepting possibly tho
12th and who even among its bit
terest foes charge tho fanners with
its sins f Oat upon the Statesman
for this wanton insult to tho Order
of Patrons of Texas

praise Our means of information
on thit subject arc good we are in
almost daily communication with

letter and each i orresj > ondent
though often writing on important
business and hurriedly finds time
to say Hurrah for Coke and
We like you all the belter for
your manly vigorous and able
defence of his administration
Upon such e idence as this we base
our conclusions that no man in the
State has so much of the popular
confidence and no man in it can
beat him for the next Governorship
We aro convinced by his every
public act Since his inauguration
as we were by his every prii ate one
