Airman LeRoy'T. Mechler,
of Mr. and Mrs. Roy T.
echler of Hondo, is a member
of a unit which, recently
acquired the newest airborne
defense systeimin the Air Force
inventory. *
Airman Mechler is a jet
engine mechanic with the 552nd
Airborne Warning and Control
Wing at Tinker AFB*
Oklahoma, whose aircrews fly
the E-3A aircraft.
The E-3A Airborne Warning
and Control System is a
modified Boeing' 707 designed
for airborne radar* surveilance
and control. Airborne radar,
unlike ground radar, is not
restricted by the earth's cur-
vature, terrain and weather.
The aircraft provides total
coverage of air activities, and
prevents low-flying aircraft
from slipping undetected into
any airspace under surveilance.
Except for the large rotating
dome, which resembles a
“piggyback" flying saucer, the
E-3A looks the same as any
other Boeing 707 airliner.
In addition to the military
mission, the aircraft can be
used to direct air traffic during
disaster operations and monitor
sea lanes for intrusion of the
United States 200-mile fishing
limit.
Airman Mechler is a 1976
graduate of Bandera High
School.
