History of Veterans Ad-
ministration Hospital in
Kerrville.
In Nov., 1919, the year after
the first Armistice, the
Benevolent War Risk Society of
Texas launched a drive for
$500,000 to erect a hospital for
the care and treatment of World
War I veterans. The site was
donated by L A Schreiner and
the late A.C. Schreiner on April
7, 1920 The construction on this
site, 24 miles southeast of
Kerrville, was started the same
year. The Society’s funds
became depleted the the project
was sold to the American
Legion, Dept of Texas, on Jan
14, 1921, for the usual fee of 91.
At this time, the name of
“Legion” was given to the
hospital After three months,
the American Legion on March
30, 1921, donated the project to
the State of Texas; and the
State Legislature appropriated
11,500,000 to complete 15 new
buildings The State Board of
Control operated the institution
until May 4, 1923, at which time
the then Veterans Bureau
leased the property and opened
the 93rd Hospital for the care of
veterans

Women's Year—IWY

This subject will be discussed
by Mrs Elizabeth Rhon of
Kerrville, November 3, at 7:90
p.m. at the Bandera Electric
Cooperative Auditorium.
Every person should use this
opportunity toward an un-
derstanding of the goals and
influence of the FWY before its
national convention in Houston
on November 19.
The threat posed by the
assault of IWY is aimed not
solely at women It is aimed at
the rights and privileges of all
Americans. It strikes at the
Constitution itself

Medina Dam
Said Safe
Structural soundness of
Medina Lake Dam has been
verified in a report by a firm of
engineers as a result of the most
exhaustive inspection con-
ducted since the aam was built,
reports officials of the Bexar
Medina-Atascosa Water Im-
provement Dist.
The report, along with
recommendations for future
monitoring of the condition of
the dam, was made to the
boared of directors of BMA by
MasoivJohnson & Associates
Inc. of Dallas, based on in-
spections conducted early in
August.
Leakage and seepage of
water was found to be minor,
with no evidence of rock
deterioration over the past
several decades, the report
revealed.
“The Glen Rose formation,
which provides support for the
structure in the valley, does not
have a history of any formation
of cavities by solutioning and
the core boring. . . in the valley
floor downstream . . reveals
the presence of tight, competent
material, free of solution
channels," the report said.
“Foundation drains installed
downstream of the cut-off key
and penetrating only the Glen
Rose formation appear to be
functioning with only a small
trickle of water being
discharged into the gallery
The complete report will be
filed with the Texas Water
Rights Commission in Austin,
according to Cliff Mueller,
president of the board.
The leakage in the abutments
of the dam has occurred for
decades, the report said, and is
within tthe Edwards and
Comanche Peak limestone
formatuyis above the Glen Rose
formation and in the joint
system of the massive
crystalline rocks in that area.
