Founded in 1849, this private liberal arts college first opened its doors in Huntsville and is the oldest institution of higher education in Texas still operating under its original name and charter. Former Texas presidents Sam Houston and Anson Jones served on the board of trustees. The college moved to Sherman following three yellow fever epidemics, the Civil War, and financial troubles.
