J1Y TIlK-WAY.
If through tho notes aud chroni-
cles of these colu -una there is a
-trong fl wor of tho alant'uig-eyod
inhabitants of the tl iwery king-
dom please b.ar with me in con-
sideration of tho fact that for three
weeks I havo been endeavoring to
imfvgine myself an unsophisticated
Japanese maid of tender years
whoso only occupation was to sing
ballads and admiro herself in a
mirror. Uudor the circumstances
it is hard to come down to plain
common sense matters for as I
catch the outline of a brilliant idea
in tho distance and my poised pencil
tlies to transcribe it on paper the
ringing strains of "Wo are gentle-
men of Japau" tloats through my
brain and tho melody dispels all
thoughts save tho recollection of
our jeunesae doroe as they tl ip their
fans and strike comical attitudes
attired in queer Japanese gowns.
Again I strive to catch the vanish-
ing idea but tbo voice of our irre
pressible "Ivo Ko" sayiDg "Ah
there Yum-y aro you parfcularly
busy?" cornea to me and involun
tirily I 3iiswer"Not particular lee"
and then f jllows such a succession
of suppressed giggles trip
ping steps fiarce glunces from
Katishaand the shuddering remem-
brance of the fearful shakes she
gives me that ieeiing perteotly
idiotic 1 ii in despair wondering
how I ever attemptel to be a repor
ter 'lousee my duhculty?
And now comes to u' as the
latest thing the "Bare feet fad."
The idea is to gat your shoes and
stockings oft' for a couple of hours
each day and give tho toes a ohance
to breathe. According to the de-
votees of the fad it is a cure-all for
all the ills to which rnaukina is
heir.
In order to give you an idea of
what tin new treatment will do for
one I give you some iju nations
from an article written by one of
the "Hue feet" disciples.
"Lighter spirits improved diges-
tion cleared heads and clearer
visions will wait on tho daily rest
from shoes and stock. ngs. Indeed
doctors now make a special point
of the salutary effect of bare feet
on the eyesight . . . While
you are giving your lisping feet
thtir duly air bath pirouette about
on your toe tips for fifteen min-u'-es
... It will start vigor-
ous circulation otherwise chilled
feet and a cold may result. . .
To go birefooted now and then
should not be disremrded bv that
rara avis the perfectly healthy and
happy women; for as I have said
the carriage cannot be truly free
and graceful until tho feet have
had sn entirely unimpeded chance
to try their paces."
An exchange tells tho following
good siory which is r3ther apropos
of the ecuial annuities on which 1
have touched of late:
A rather vulgar psrsonajje who
had bieu created a marquis a fow
months previous to our Htory
managed to get himself invited to a
court ball. The new-ibdged
marq lis could not contain himself
for j jy and exhaled proua satis-
faction from every pore.
1 Casting an O.ympian glance
arounl the room he chanced to spy
among tho ladies tho taU angul tr
fi.-iKeof an elderly matron with
compressed lips as though afraid of
wasting her breath ana as lean as a
lath; she was ljauiug on tho arm of
a gentleman.

M S3 Claro do Graffpnroid epeoial
agent for the United States Depart-
ment of Labor in hor lait report of
women labjrers speaks of the
Soathern group as being uniq ie
and says: "Nowhere else in the
world do bo many well bred women
ba krupt aud bereft of nnlo jiro-
vidtr" 1 ibor at manual calling-! as
in tho South pursuing without loss
of caste vocations wnich elsohero
involve soc'al ostracism. At tho
close of tho war about one hundred
new avenues of industry had been
opened lor women. In ten years
following tho number doubled
while today there aro over four
hundred occupations which women
are lollowing witti more or less
social and finauaial success."
LoRw sayi: "Public opinion is
still largely opposed to the idea of
wom-'ii boing independent socially
and financially pelf supporting. The
seclusion of their homes is still
considered to be tho only safe and
honorable environment. Time
must be allowed for the gradual
dying out of this long cherished
belief but when it dies 2s dio io
must aud s dissolution is already
begun with it will also perish a
host of pernicious notions whioh
will leavo tho world better for their
departure."
All honor to such sentiment and
it is with pride that I reprint tho
statement that the South gives suoh
substantial support aud aid to
working women. It is our own
state which can boast of a judge
who from his bouch recently
voiced the utterance that a working
woman had the right to every man's
protection and holp.
Only a piep through a cottage
window whosj ha'f-drawn curtain
afforded a glimpse of a fire-lit room
where in silhouette against the
dancing 11 imes a man sat rocking a
tot of three and as the chair sway-
ed to and fro tho blended voices of
tho twain singing: "O Patsty
mind the baby" told my listening
ears the nightly singing losson was
in progress. Gradually the little
drowsy voice died away the man's
