The four days excursion from
Galveston to Fort Worth and Dal-
las which leaves Galveston this
morning will reach Brenham at 12
and the fare from here tor tne
round trip will only be Si tickets
for sale on the train. This is a cheap
trip and quite a number will avail
Nthemselves of the opportunity of
visiting those places.
With the Brenham compress and
oil mill company's large force to-
gether with the bucket brigade on
the McFadden compress and the
26 other manufacturing industries
of Brenham the pay roll Satur-
day was something immense. Bren-
ham may not be booming like Vales-
co but she is steadily increasing her
bucket brigade and her manufac-
turing industries and it is this that
maintains a city.

TALK ABOUT VELASCO.
Messrs. Harry Haynes J. T.
Hairston and M. J. Jacobs have just
returned from a trip to Velasco the
deep water port of the Texas cosat.
They report everything improving
there rapidly and the residents per-
fectly sanguine of its future great-
ness in the near future.
The reporter sought out Mr.
Haynes on account of his experi-
ence in booming and the real estate
business and asked his opinion
-about it.
V He says that he is not as enthusi-
astic as some of those who have
gone down before though he thinks
it will eventually be a good sized
city. He sought out the managers
of tho Brazos Terminal company
that are now building a road to
Chenango 21 miles up this way and
discussed the advantages of extend-
ing it to Brenham to which they re-
plied they were port builders not
railroad men but talked as though
they could be induced to build the
road on up here provided Brenham
would put up a bonus of sufficient
magnitude to be worth their
while to consider. Mr. Haynes
elaborated on its advantages suffi-
cient to put them to think-
ing and as a good friend to Bren-
ham L. li. Bryan Esq. is secretary
of the company it is not unroasona
ble to hope that more will be heard
of this project later. The advan-
tages of a road direct from Brenham
"to a deep water port can be seen at
a glance and Brenham could well
afford to put up a big bonus to se-
cure it.
Mr. Haynes thinks that this port
Sjill draw a great deal of Northwes-
tern trade to Texas that has hitherto
gone by rail to the east and there
sought an outlet through tne eastern
orts but that grain elevators will
Have to be built there and big prep-
anitions bo made for shippers before
they can expect to turn the tide this
way.
So many of Brenham's citizens
L.iro invested in Velasco that Bren
ham's interest and Velasco are
largely identical "and they watch
with interest the growth of that
city.

The Summer celebration and bar-
becue at Handle's Hill Friday was
attended by about 800 colored peo-
ple and pronouced a big success.
There was an abundance to feed the
assembled multitude and rations
left. The programme of races tour-
nament etc. was carried out and
furnished exciting and amusing en-
tertainment for the crovd which
was only marred by one incident
that occurring in one of the races
a horse that Dock Boland was ri-
ding failing on him breaking one
of his legs. The success of the cel-
ebration is due to the efforts of J.
M; H. Randle.
A Growing Business and a New Central
Office.
The McFadden Bros. have re-
centlv fitted up a handsome office
just across the hall from Messrs.
Axer ic btnekerts cotton office
through which all their growing
business here under the supervision
of Mr. Win. Axer is to be transacted
including their cotton and compress
business. This office is presided
over by Capt. J. M. Byrnes and is
one of the neatest furnished most
conyeniently arranged and cosiest
little offices in the city. This com-
press company as well as the Bren-
ham compress and oil mill company
are talking of putting ini an electric
light plaut. It is hoped that one of
the companies will take hold of the
enterprise and shove it through.

A IVOLF IN THE CITY.
For three successive nights this
week a large wolf has invaded the
Camptown suburb of the city and in
his prowling has killed a dozen
young dogs. It is said that he seems
to be especially fond of a young dog
and has about cleaned Camptotvn
out of pup's nnd lice. He has been
chased out once or twice and seen
by several parties who describe him
as a very largo wolf.
