The special edition of the Hous-
ton Post Thursday contained twenty-four
pages with full page des-
criptions of Houston and Harris
county and extensive write-ups of
Houston's leading industries. It
was a magnificent edition unexcelled
by any that has been issued in the
State a credit to Houston as well
as the enterprising management of
that able paper.
Statistics continue to show a
large increase in immigration bring-
ing the total of new arrivals for the
last ten months to 523458 as against
427660 for the corrresponding
period of 1890 an increase of nearly
100000 and promising a total of
over 600000 newcomers for the
year. The returns also show the
change in the elements making up
this immigration which has been
noted for some years past the heavy
influx of Slavs and Italians who
have only just begun coming.
The late James Partoa used to
tell how early in his career he was
itemizing for a weekly paper and
he noticed that a large share of
news was devoted to exposing hu-
man frailties. Thereupon he re-
solved to make a reform in journal-
ism. He began to collect matter
for a new feature in his paper:
"Good Deedb Done Lately." Dur-
ing the first week he picked up only
a few paragraphs for it but he
wrote a flourishing introduction and
gave good earnest of the future.
But the next week the stock was
still smaller. Nobody rescued any-
body else from a watery grave ; no-
body lost a wallet and rewarded the
ragmuffin who picked it up ; and so
the new department perished of in-
anation. nEAD' THIS.
