PENDLETON'S COURSE.
Tiik Waco Ni:w semns to win-
der at tho po-dtion taken by the
Day Globe that Congressman Pen-
dleton will be renom'nated by the
Democrats of tho Seventh district.
It i simple. Nearly all those Hum.
oorats approve Pendleton's course.
Among the men aspiring to oust
him they d scern worthy gentlemen
it is true but not a mm who nny
be supposed to possess a greater
degree of ability or fl'iuna for the
place than the present incumbent.
Therefore they ask why Pendleton
should bo shelved. Ho will not bo
and ere lo our esteemed contem-
porary will hold this view. Day-
wiono.
When the Day Globa says nearly
all the Deni crats in this distrlot
approve iPendluton's course it
is bolioved that it makes a serious
mistake tor this paper has been un-
able to find any considerable num.
ber of Democrats who are at all
pleased with the idea of having him
again returned to oongrdss. It is a
f-r.ita in thin district that is a large
maj irity of them are bimetaMisls;
it win known all along that Mr.
Cleveland was a mouomelallist and
it was believed tho only way poesi
bio tosccun his approval of legis-
lation favorable to silvar was to
attach such legislation to the repeal
of tho Sherman law the friends of
the people and of silver like Coke
urged this course iUr. Pendleton
voted for tho unconditional repeal
of tho purchasing clauso of tho
Sherman law and thus did what he
could to destroy all hope of favor-
ab'c silver legislation during Mr.
Cleveland's administration and his
activity in mounting his desk to
vote for the Rland bill will not re
instate him in tho coufi lenco of tho
people whom he misrepresented in
his vote on tho repeal bill.
THE SETTLEMENT.
Chairman Baker managed the las'.
campa:gn with the ability of an
able patriot ami the shrewdness of
a politician Ivit it wis in his effirts
which resulted in tne unification of
the party in which Iip proved him-
self to be in every W3y a worthy
leader of the party over whoso ex-
ecutive coiumitt e he so ably pre-
sides. Tin: Nkws lias saun inuny
letters fr.jm leading Democrats on
each side of the late opposing fac-
tions and without exception they
expressed tho highest appreciation
of tho wise conservative and patri-
otic action of Mr. Baker and his
committee. Among them we have
seen a private letter from Senator
Coke to a friend in this ciiy re-
ceived some time ago from which
wo have been permitted to make the
following extract:
"The prompt and intelligent ac-
tion of Chairman Baker in respond-
ing to a general demand for the
unification of the Democratic par
ty and his judgment discretion
and tact in bringing together and
solidifying the party on terms in-
volving no humiliation on account
of paat differences is worthy of all
praise and cannot fail to have im-
pressed the Domooraoy of Tdxas
with his ability and conservatism
as a party leader. Those of us who
have known Waller S Baker since
his boyhood did not need this test
of his capacity for leadership to
convince ub that the Demooritic
party its honor and its principles
were in safe 3nd competent hands.
In this ennrgenoy the party was
fortunate in having suoh a chair-
man at the head of its able and
patriotic executive committee."
That Chairman Baker acted wise-
ly and patriotically even those
who wore disposed to ditlur with
him at the t'me of settlement now
concede.

Let Not tho Platform be Bar-
gained Away.
Tho dispitohes from Washington
showing that the DLm3critic con-
gre63men 3ro taking aggr smvg ac
tion toward securing upon that
plank in the Democratic platform
which calls for the repeal of the
tax on sta'e bank issues and which
while standing alone would be ex-
ceedingly gratifying to the Demo-
oratio masses have some very dis-
turbing and ominous reports accom-
panying and following them.
These reduced to substance aro
that the administration will demand
a virtural surrender by tho nn.
cratio majority in congress of the
silver plank of the Democratic
platform in consideration of the re
peal of tho bank tar and that too
upon conditions. The nnnri;t;nnc
are that in several material aspects
the issues of state banks aro to be
under Federal control.
The most vital feature of federal
conditions is that state banks shall
adequately provide for the redemp-
tion of their notes under tho sapor-
vision of tho comptroller of our.
rcnoy. There are alnn nUinr i..
tant features of fedoral control.
iue redemption feature alone how
abaolu'ely undr the heel of Wall
street.
We would sound a note of warn-
ing to Democratic congressmen not
to a' low themselves to bo deceived
or betrayed by any such a scheme
and not to bargain away the pilvor
or any other plank of the Demo-
cratic platform in order tv scare
the carrying out of the farcied car-
rying out of another plank of the
same. Stand squarely upon princi-
ple and if tho fruit of our great vie
tory of Novembir 1S02 is to bo
turned into allies and our platform
completely nullified let tho issue bo
squarely drawn iu that way and let
the American people understand it
and p'aco the responsibility for it
where it belongs.
The people want no letting down
easy; no sham performance of
promises; no trading away of any
nlank of thn nlatform. If the Dem
ocratic platform is .to be defeated
justice to the Democratic parly do.
