WHAT FARM EMPLOYERS
MUST DO IN JANURAY
By John D. Palmer
District Social Security Office
In previous articles in this
series I pointed out the wage
reporting and social security
tax remitting responsibility
many farm and ranch operators
must meet by January 31, 1956.
This applies to all of them who
paid as much as $100 cash wag-
es to any one agricultural em-
ployee in the calendar year
1955.
Chevrolet Introduces"New Trucks
He;ide:l by a newly developed automatic trans-1 provements marks the new Chevrolet trucks. The
nission. tiihele.s tires and more powerful six- and above half-ton pickup typifies the styling, \isi-
ight-cylinder engines, an impressive list of im- bility and convenience of the 1956 line.
Right now I want to define
“agricultural labor” as the
term applies to social security '
under the old age and surviv- [
(ors insurance program. The j
definition includes services per-
formed on a farm in connection
with the raising and harvest-
ing of products, etc. of livestock
poultry, bees, fur-bearing ani-
mals and wildlife; service in the
care of the employer’s farm and
equipment if performed for the
most part on a farm; services
performed in handling, process-
ing or packing agricultural com-
jmodities produced in major part
i by the employer; services
| in connection with cotton gin-
j ning; and domestic service in.
j or about the household of the
I employer if performed on a
| farm operated for profit.
i If you operate an agricutural
enterprise—either as sole own-
jer or in partnership, and you
paid any one employee as much
as $100 cash wages to perform
agricultural labor in 1955, you
have an obligation to meet be-
fore the end of January. Spec-
, ifically, you must fill Internal
• Revenue Service Form 943,
j “Employer’s Tax and Informa-
, tion Return for Agricultural
i Employees,” and remit the so-
: lial security tax.
j Tne amount of your tax is
|four percent; it applies to each
I of your agricultural workers to
whom you paid cash wages of
$100 or more in the year.
