The Sermon Yesterday.
Although the streets were very
muddy last night tho Christian
church was well filled with an ap-
preciative audience mostly of young
folks to hear Mr. Gllbort lecture on
"Purpose tho True Tost pt Manhood
and Womanhood." From the begin-
t'lg it wits ovldont that the spoakcr
had tho attention of the entire
audience and it should havo been so
for uover was thoro a more solid or
eloquent lecture delivered in Waco.
The ground work of his lecture was
solid and logical and the ilight of ora-
tory superbly grand. Mr. Gilbert is
both a great roasonor i.u elocution-
ist we feel utorly unablo to describe
tho lecture but will say to those who
lovo to Ustou to good preaching go

A Sad Aooldent.
Yesterday forenoon about ten
o'clock a very sad accident happened
to little Ethel 7-year-old daughter of
Mr and Mrs. Travis Jones. While
sitting in a window in the second story
of the house the pretty little girl lost
her balance and fell to the ground be-
low alighting on the hard pavement.
The fall was a fearful one but happi-
ly was not a fatal one. The physician
who was on the spot in a few minutes
after the accident found.the little child
terribly wounded. One arm was brok-
en at the wrist one of the joints in the
other was dislocated and she was in-
jured internally. The fond parents
are distracted over the accident which
it is to be hoped the little sufferer will
soon recover from.

I am a poor carpenter and live in
Carpontorsvllle In tho northwestern
portion of tho city. I havo beon
tak'ng your valuable paper ovor
slnco tho first issue and knowing
your sympathy for tho poor I tako
this mode of giving tho citizens
of both classes my idea of how
to bocomo good cilizons. A little
over two years ago tho building
associations of Waco lot it bo known
that thoy would furnish a lot nnd
tho money to got lumber hardware
otc. to every man who would build
bis own hoHse on it and as a conse-
qnonco in less than three months
thoro wore twsnty-fivo or thlrtyj

fiulshod and a large majority of thorn
are up with their payments. In tho
Icoifrsoof two years moro thoy Will

ront would have amounted to.
Now if tho building associations
will do tl-'s all the time thoy Mill
find qulto a number of people who
would embraco tho opportun'ty to
build who would never bo able other
wise to do so. A man will tako
much moro interest in a city that ho
owns property in than ho Would If ho
was simply a renter and will mako a
hotter citizen and pay his debts hotter
if ho is interested than If he is renting.
It will also eiihanco property nnd

Fossil Wyo. Aug. 20. A strange
phenomenon was obsorved hero nt
b10 o.clock this ovoning. In tho
northwest part of tho sky about 3 "
above the horizon there appeared u
flgurovery similar to tho horu-llko
appearnuco of tho now moon except
that it was larger and somewhat
fainter though dlstinot and well de-
fined. From It thoro shot downward
an Immense ball of fire llko an over-
grown moteor leaving n tall nf light
behind it lasting soveral minutes bo-
fore it fated entirely away. This ball
of llro v as fully as large and nearly
as bright as tho sun. During a half
hour tho horn remained yisible till
It was obscured by clouds. Flashes
of moteoric llirht wore seen playing
around and through it. Aftor tho
clouds had passed away tho Hashes
could still bo soon from below tho
horizon for morcthnn an hour. Tho
full moon was shining in tho oppo-
site part of tho sky during tho ap-
pearanco of tho phenomena.
A Ulrl tlmt Vhch COrk Nlnys
She stepped down to the foamy
edge of the surf and ran back scream-
ing prettily as the water ran up over
her toes. And all the spectators
smiled. And then she ran down again
and danced on one toe and then on
the other and then on both at once
as she got in all the way up to her
ankles. Then she plucked up all her
comage and as a big wave rolled in
she ran to meet it.
It flopped her bang up against the
beach knocked her sailor hat into
shapelessness and as it receded drew
her out as if she had been a wooden
ball. It was almost too much of a
good thing' and she struggled and
wringgled and splutteied. And while
she struggled to get a foothold another
wave seized her and she flipped over
the top of it as light as an eggshell.
Quick as thought came a third and
she danced over the top ot that also
and every time she tried to get on her
feet she was Whisked back.
Then she realized that she was beau
tifully floating out to sea and she sent
up a scream that startled the batheis
near her One of them young and
brave and strong rushed for it was
too shallow to swrm to her rescue.
He seized her by the shoulder but
her feet would not down and being a
wise and thoughtful lad he towed her
into shore. She scarcely stopped to
say thank you and with the r.d blood
of confusion showing in her tanned
cheeks rushed away to change her gar-
ments. She might have escaped with
that had she not imparted the secret of
the episode to a friend.
And the secret was this: She was a
prudent girl w'th a proper regard for
her safety. She had taken out the
whalebones of her corsets and intro
duced cork stays and had put another
layer of cork in her stockings. She
had miscaculated the effect only to
find that while the cork kept her
nicely above water it quite effectually
prevented her getting down also. The
story came out and the girl left
Ocean Grove simultaneously yester-
day. m
