When the extention of the city
boundaries was first mooted it was the
suburbans who were the ones to kick
and they did kick a la can can.
When they had in a measure subsided
the urbans began to howl and are now
making the most noise. When those
who are out are determined not to
como in and those who are in are try-
ing to keep them out' an unanimity of
sentiment seemi to have been reached
whioh should bo decisive.
A little scrapping raatoh occurred

him down again as he got up and
then set his hat right on his head
and walked off with tho air of a man

Mr. John W. Davis Esq. of Vir-
ginia whose presence in the eity was
mentioned in the News a few days ago
has decided to locate in Waco. We
find in the Jeffersoman Republican of
CharletteBvill Vs. one' of our ex-
changes tho following home notice :
"On Wednesday Mr. John W.Davis
and family left for Texas which is to
be their future home and are now in
Crockett Houston county.
"Mr. Davis' removal from Charlottes-
ville is grettly regretcd. He had been
a member of the bar of Albemarie for
several years and was very successful
in his practice in whioh he displayed
more than the common share of pluck
and energy. He is a man of decided
ability and we shall be disappointed if
he does not take a front place at thetbar
of his adopted State. He doesn't know
how to give up when he has marked
out a line of conduot whioh he consid-
ers right and as he ib generally right
this trait will bear him to the front aud
keep him there. He was a good citi-
zen here and will be there. Our good
wishes for his success and happiness
follow him."

ly a hearty welcome.

New Tear's Day.
Tho celebration of New Year's vea-
Jtrday was very general. Besides tho
receptions thcro wero a number of
balls and private parties at night and
sevearl private re-unions making the
entire city on pleasure bont. All the
carriages and similar vehicles in tho
city were in requisition during tho .
day the callers being very numerous
and at night also for the various par-
ties of pleasure mentioned. The
houses of ladies receiving wore throne-
d constantly during tho hours of re
ceiving.
Iho formal receptions wero in sever
al cases followed at night by informal
receptions to whioh guests of the day
were rcinvuuu ana me mgnt given up
to music convorse or dancing. At the
residence of Mrs. J. G. Winter over a
hundcred couple made the night giddy
with flying feet to the musio of Book-
er's orchertra. The reception at Mrs.
Winter's during tho day was crowded
and tho night oven more enjoyable if
fiossiblo and the lovely hostess won
rurels of enoomimus from her delight
ed guests. An informal reception was
also given at night at the hospitable
residences of Mrs. W. W. Seley Mrs.
Tv P. Sparks and Mrs. Womack. The
charming ladies played the hostess to
perlection and the general sentiment
as heard expressed bv the young peo
ple to-day is to the effect that yester
day s receptions and last night s par-
ties were chefs d' aeurrcs in Bociol en-
tertainments. The Carpenters Ball.
The ball last night at Armory Hall
under the auspices of tho Carpenters
and Joiners Union was largely at- j
tended and a very successful affair.
The large room was profusely and char-
acteristically decorated with ensignia
of the craft and with other decora
tions. Over a hundred couples par-
ticipated th the dancing to musio fur-
nished by the Little Five. The com-
mittee of arrangements consisted of
Messrs. James C. Peterson Thos.
Powers Jas. Byruni E. V. Zuerncr
N. T. Ellisar and John Kenchan.
Their excellent management contrib-
uted largely to the success of the ball.
Thero were many very pretty ladies on
the floor and some brilliant dancers.
The Carpenters Union is a large and
influential labor organization and tntt
very generous proceeds of the entor-
tainment go to the benefit of the local
order.
Oone Out of Business.
The doors of a small confectionary

favor of the former to the amount of
$60.30 and of the latter 9.85. Mr.
Perry has done a small business in the
city for two years past.

0.
Meek. This afternoon the storo was
opened and Mr. Boyd Huff placed in
cnarge to soil off stocks and bxtures.
A Curious Vind.
The bovs at tho oountv clerks office
in going through the records for tlif
purpose of makini! abstracts mate
some ourious discoveries. The latest V
was a deed for block- fourteen lyio
immediately behind the old Orand
stable showing that the whole blocL
or seven lots was sold at sheriff'b sal-'
in 1852 for ten cents. Thoy also
found record of whoro in the sama
year threo leagues or 13000 acres in
this county sold for $25 while now it
is worth that per acre.
