There is a magnificent season in the
ground and all the odds are in favor of
a big crop this year. 1889 will be
come a ceicDraiea year in ixus.
Two trains can't pass on the eamo
track. It is tried daily on those hop-
ping ptones across Austin street but
without success. One train has in-
variably to side-track in the mud.
The abundant and continued rains
insure abundant stock water he a year
to como and abundant subsoil water to
insure a big cotton crop almost inde-
pendent of summer rain.
A colored brother in the Alexandria
valley down in Georgia sent the fol-
lowing request -for a minister to his
bishop: '-Send us a bishop to preach.
If you can't send us a bishop send us
a sliding elder; if you can't send a slid-
ing elder send us a stationary preacher;
if you can't send him sond us a circus
rider; if you can't spare him send us
a locus preacher; if you can't spare a
locus preacher send us an exaustcr."
That settled it and ho got a preacher.
The hopping stones at the Austin
street crossings have Denn dug up and
rc-placed by real crossings in three or
four places and the good work should
gb on until the last one is ro-placed
not only for the bonefit of the present
age but for tho safety of future gen-
erations. For if it was to happen that
Waco was to be buried up like Pom-
peii or Ilcrculancum and dug up by
antiquarians about the year four thou-
sand thoso hopping stones would'
drivo tho savans of thatacto into in. anc
asylums. Tho only inference which'
could explain them would be that they
were used as roosting perches by tho
semi-barbarous inhabitants of tho an-
cient city. Even tho remote danger
of being so mipjudged by posterity is
sufficient cause lor getting rid of those
excrescences as quick as possible
The Miaoo.
Tho Magic Talisman wa presented
' last ullit at the opera Iioubo. The
play Is a pt pourl and oxtravaganza
not aiming to be wise but to amuse
and hi this respect it is a success. The
plot and play lay hands on every thing
in the earth above and bolow lor
niatorial and farlea dance alone aide
or devils Imps and modern coquottlsh
girls. Tho artist hat called his aux-
illiarle from all parts of the earth
nu; has grouped every thing pro
grotesque ludicrous and sldo-spllttiig
Into one showj It Is a variety show
and panttomlmo and lacks only the
trick niulo to make it completo. It is
vastly amusing and a bonanza to those
who love riotous unadulterated fun.

BILL NYE IN ALABAMA.
Uo Writes Up Alabama Had Mr. Uaitri.
MoxTootanv Ala tcoi before Last
We aro now la tho coStor of the cotton belt
I limro not boon In tho cento? of a cotton belt
before slnco 1 was a child.
Hero wo went over Mr. UUoy and I to boo
the largo press squat tho dayllgbti out of a
bolo of cotton. Tho old fashioned cot-
ton squatter which worked like a elder
trots Is only utllLtod at present for homo use.
It puts n $48 baloof cotton down'to about
tho size of an upright piano or folding bod.
Then it Is brought to town whero a Urge
athlctlo press of more modern mechanism
shuts It up Into ono-fourth Its former dee
wbilo nlmblo (lngors readjust tho hoop Iron
wrappers.
Tho old fashioned prosa Is operated by a
mule supported by a colored man whose
whole llfo Is a shoreless calm and whoso sys-
tem is saturated with rest. Tho mulo walla
around tho press and tho negro remains
stationary. It Li tho origin of what bat been
since called tho walk around.
Tho upright of tho press la largo acrew
which as it revolves brings tho relentless
jaws of tho machlno closer and closer to
gothcr. Six hands of hoop iron aro then
wrapped around It and It is ready for market.
Birmingham is tho most romarkablo city
in tho south. It U tnoro llko n booming min
ing town than anything cbo and looks like
Lcadvlllo in tho flush times. When wo rode
Into tbo city it was a rcmarknblo transition
from tho old stylo of Alabama towns. Red
mouthed furnaces yawned llko sleepy giants
and painted tho somber sky a gaudy crimson
with their hot breath. Busy people might
bavo been seen hero and there going some-
where instead of waiting patiently for somo-
body to walk around them or looking re-
proachfully at strangers who had been
brought up to business habits.
Birmingham is a young Kansas City and
has city lots staked out so far west and Kan-
sas City ha3 so many extending cast that
thero is really only a narrow strip of ground
between tho two towns and It is being rap-
Idly bought up. A now railroad connects tbo
two young giants and a fow oholco lots in
either place will bo a good investment for
thoso who bavo become weary of putting
their monoy into Canadian tout Ists.
Birmingham reminds mo so forcibly of a
booming mining town that I remarked to Mr.
Riley as we got off tho train that all wo
noeded to carry out tho similarity was an
earnest lynching party. In less than tw enty
four hours a crowd of 6000 people mado a
party call to tbo jail for tho purposo of ex-
tending tho neck of a gentleman named
Ilawes but after twenty pooplo bad been
UUlcd and wounded by tho omccrs thoy ro-
trcatcd. Several strangers who bad never
su n man lynched and wanted to bo ablo
to scaro their children with tbo story when
thoy got homo by telling about it went to
tho entertainment returning later on by tho
way ot tho undbrtakcr's store.
Mr. Ilawes was a man who bod on earnest
uaturo and a largo red elm club with which
ho over nnd anon attracted tbo attention of
his wifo when bo wanted to communicate a
disagreeable truth to her. But bo would most
always feel real sorry about It afterward
and ono tlmo after bo bad broken two of his
wife's ribs in this way ho told her bo could
soo that ho had perhaps boen hasty and given
her needless pain and ho believed that bo had
better divldo up bis attentions between her
and another woman so that onoof them
could recover whtlo bo gently rebuked tbo
other.
So bo married another woman and this
created a personal fooling between tho two
for no truo wifo can bear to know that her
soul's idol is lavishing his kicks on another.
Night after night tho first wifo would sit up
all nlono counting tho lagging hours all the
tlmo knowing full well that ber rival was
gottlngall tho largo bluo welts ovor tho back
which had In tho happy past been hers and
hers nlono. Thoy hod two little girls which
Mr. Uawcs was in tho habit of kissing in
public and kicking across the uresldo
occasionally and so when littlo
May wns found lying dead on tbo
horo of East lake Mr. Ilawes was
filacod in jail. Whllo re were in Blrming-
lam tho citizens of tho town dragged tho lako
and found tbo first Mrs. Uawcs at tbo bot-
tom with a large quantity of railroad Iron
attached to her. That was partly what cre-
ated a fooling against Mr. Ilawes and so a
great many of his old neighbors went up to
tbo jail to present blm with tbo freedom of
tho Now Jerusalem but thoy wcro foiled.
Several of them wcro o much so that tboy
will never wholly recover flora its effects.
Mi'. Ilawes did wrong In tho tlrst Instance in
marrying two w omon. When a man marries
two women bo Is already on tbo downward
road. "Ono wifo seems to call for auotbci"
In such n case and then ill feeling arises Mr.
Ilawes of courso then tried to obviate tbo
vlfo ho had at first married and now pooplo
litllko bun for it
Mr. Ilawes mado a mUtako also Id marry
ing a woman anyway. Uo should havo
married a southern hotel carpot and then a
littlo beating wouldn't bavo been out of nlaco
though of coura It might bavo aroused bus-
plclou. No man should accumulate a family with a
'view toward eradicating tbomas soon as ho
becomes w cary of them and desires to becomo
tbo head of another family for whom ho has
a higher regard. And so Mr. Uawcs Is in a
very trying position nt this tlmo Ho may
wake up mast any morning now and llnd
hbnsolf In a felon's gravo. This ought to bo
a solemn arnlngto littlo boys and girls who
may bo tempted to lpo out a previous family
It: order to becomo tnoro solid as 1 may say
with a recent one.
Wo aro bav(ng a good tlmo scooting about
over tho country changing cars two pr three
times In ono night and in other ways enjoy-
ing oursolvej to tho utmost. Wo sleep days
lecture- ovenings and at night abandon our-
selves to changing cars. At first we devoted
tbo first half of tho night to orations ban'
quota and demonstrations but now wo bavo
quit. Having but ono stomach apiece and
having about six mourns or mis our looming
up ahead with Its prospectlvo mirth music
and quail on toast wo bnvo registered a large
hot vow on tho hotel register hereafter to
substitute ou such occasions our pew agent
who has four stomachs and a vallso together
with an alimentary which would certainly be
an omauipnt to any society. Bill Nyo in
