El Pasoans Make Strike in
Property That Has a -History.
A remarkably rich silver discovery
has been made recently in the Sierra
j de Tios Muertos or "mountain of the
dead." also called Duende or haunted
I mountain) about 60 miles southwest of
El Paso in northern Chihuahua.
The discovery consists of silver sul-
phides of high srade at the very sur-
face. A shaft was sunk 25 feet and a
; of Qre wag sllIpped to tIie E1 paso

constant giving the "Barreal" the ap-
pearance of a vast lake or inland sea
enclosing the Muertos mountain island.
This mountain is about 10 miles long
and two or three miles wide and cov-
ered with grass and a few scattered
oak and junipers which make it appear
a real oasis in the surrounding desert-
Recently water has been found in the
mountain sufficient for camp purposes.
3IIne With a History.
The mine is about 20 miles southeast
from kilometer 95 a station on the
Mexico Northwestern railway. The
name of this mysterious solitary moun
tain is said to have originated from a3
story of the Mexicans to the effect that
several years ago two American pros-
pectors were mining there all alone
and they used to take turns packing
water from the distant San Bias moun-
tain. ITinallj' one was seen riding away
and he never showed np again.
An Investigating party afterward vis-
ited the mountain and found the dead
bodj of the other In a cabin with every
appearance of having been murdered.
Samples of very rich silver ore were
piled up around the cabin. Filled with
superstitious dread after burying the
body they hurried away without
searching for the mine.

Duluth Minn. is developing- a mining
property in the Steeple Rock district
in Grant counts' -coutlnvestern Xew
Mexico. A shaft "has been sunk on a
vertical vein to a depth of 275 feet in
pay ore from the surface. The ore
values are about $15 per iton of which
values 75 percent is in gold and 25 per-
cent is silver.
The company -was organized by
Harold C. Spence a mining engineer
-who has spent considerable time in that
district examining and developing sev
eral properties. The company is com-1

money in iron and copper mining.
Nearly all the men on the directorate

is a close corporation.

Eitas.
Superintendent J. M. Sully's last re-
port on the Chino mines In the Santa
Ritas. X. M.. states that tlierft has been i
a very rapid increase within the past
month in the ore tonnage and that the
present indications are that there will
be very material extensions in "the two
ore bodies the Hearst and the Blis
which have recently added such large
tonnages to the ore reserves.
The drills have been removed from
the last named mines and placed in the
undrilled spaces connecting the Texas
Flat and the TVhim Hill ore bodies and
the Romero and -Yin Shaft ore bodies.
The location for the main work shaft
has now been located and sinking will
be started within this month. The de-
sign for hoisting apparatus will be sim-
ilar to that in the Ray mine.
wing to the"large amount of coarse
metalic copper in the Chino mine the
company will erect a small refining
furnace to melt this product and ship it
in bullion which will result in -a very
substantial saving in smelting costs as
something over 20 percent of the total
output of the copper can be disposed of
in this way making a material saving
of freight on concentrates and of smelt-
ing charges.

SHATTUCK DEVELOPING
LARGE ORE BODIES
On the 600 level of -the Shattuck in
Bisbee there is an ore-body 355 feet
long and six to 15 feet wide. This is
a solid high grade oxide with considerable-cuprite
in it going better than 20
percent. This body is opened up to the
500 level and by a winze to 40 feet be-
low the 600 level. This ore body has a
value of more than $2500000.
On (the same level in another place is
a body of the same stuff 60x100 feet
which extends to the 500 and above it.
What is between the fifth and sixth
levels of this ore body has a value of
more than $1500000.
A third body of good grade oxide has
been found In this same level 50 by
six feet.
Two bodies of sulphide and one of
oxide ore opened up in the seventh
level while on the 800 level -there has
been opened one body of sulphide alone
that is 125 to 135 feet which assays
4 1-20 percent copper although some of
it runs 12 percent. On this level 'is the
largest oxide body in the mine running
7 percent which is being kept for fu-

prospecting has only begun.

m BIG DEAL
FOR MEXIGO II
Company Financed in Lon-j

in Paehuca.
A prominent mining engineer of this
city has just received advice from Lon-
dor? England that another big mining
transaction has been consummated on
the Santa Cruz de Alamos mine an
old Spanish nronertv. in Paphnpq att-
t iCo. by Prof. Robert T. Hill the eml-
nent geologist who uassed through hero
a few weeks ago on his way from the
mine to England. He has successfully
financed the affairs of the Bonanza
and is now simply arranging the details
for operations on a large scale upon
hi? return to this country.
Prof. Hill and associate purchased
a half interest in the mine from the
Mexican owner and with him. have
formed a Mexican holding company to
hold the title which consisted of pnlyj
ouu snares rney nave already expended
over $250000 in improvements new de-
velopments ami installing a mill cyanide
plant hoists power and pumping plant
and have every assurance that the
property will be a big paying one in a
very short time. In London a reorgan-
ization was effected and a new com-
pany formed with" a capital of $2000-
000. styled the Bonanza Mining com-
pany limited.
On Bonanza Vein.
The property owned by this company
has a superficial area of 87 pertenen-
cias or 215 acres and is about three
kilometers north of the great Santa
Gertrudls property lately purchased by
the Camp Bird company for $9000000
cash and is on the same lode called
j the "Viscaina vein which averages from
li to IS feet In width and attains in
places a size of as great as 40 to 45
feet. j
This vein has been traced on the out-
crop running from north to south a
great distance being distinctly shown
for 15 kilometers the longest continu-
ous mineral belt in the republic of Mex-
ico. It has been worked for at least
eight kilometers of this distance
yielding many millions of dollars
coursing through such bonanzas as the
Rosario Santa Gertrudls Santa Cruz de
Alanos Guatamoczin. Maravillo.
Trouuillo Dolores and others most of
the mines havinggone to considerable
depth excepting the one owned by the
new company.
' Rich Silver Ore.
For a decade prior to 1890 the mine
was operated by the former owner and
yielded over $1000000 but he was com-
peted to quit operations when he reach-
ed a depth comparatively shallowx of
only 180 meters. The. mine is said to
have yielded several millions In the
century preceding.
The ores averaged in the upper
workings 97 ounces of silver and were
growing richer as depth "was reached
Mining operations in depth In the Vis-
caina vein in the Paehuca district have
proved the ore bodies to be persistent;
richer and. larger ore bodies having
been found in the deep workings than
near the surface.
The deepest workings of the Pachuci
district are those of the Santa Gertru-
di? Mining company which reach 1400
feet.
Cynnlde Plants.
There are r-ow installed in the Pa-hcut-a
district six large modern cyanide
plants with a capacity of 1500 tons per
day and two other new plants are being
installed. All this is the work of the
past four years.
The Instalatiou of electrical power by
two companies in the district also help-
ed to cheapen power.
