came assistant managing editor in 1954 and
managing editor in 1957. He is a member of
the American Society of Newspaper Editors
and the Associated Press Managing Editors
Association. He was named a member of the
board of directors of The News in 1960.
SOL M. KATZ. circulation manager of The
News, was born in Corsicana, Texas, the son
of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Katz. In boyhood he
came to Dallas with his family and was edu-
cated in the public schools of this city, grad-
uating from high school in 1932. After serving
as a Dallas News carrier, he got a regular job
on a circulation phone desk in 1929 at the age
of 16 while still in high school. He became
successively a district manager and zone man-
ager, and in 1943 was named city circulation
manager. He was promoted to circulation
manager in 1950. He is a past president of the
Texas Circulation Managers Association. Hie is
also a director of the International Circulation
Managers Association. During his tenure as
circulation manager of The News, its circula-
tion became the largest in Texas. daily and
Sunday. He was named a member of the
board of directors in 1960.
A. EARL CULLUM JR. is head of a firm
of consulting engineers in the fields of radio
broadcasting and television with headquarters
in Dallas and domestic and foreign interests
as widely separated as Boston, San Diego,
Seattle, Miami and Puerto Rico. Born atDALLAS GORDON RUPE
Abilene, Texas, h'e recet''ived his education at
North DIallas High School, Southern Methodist
University, and Massachusetts Institute of
Technology. In addition to his private busi-
ness, he has been active in the Institute of
Radio Engineers in the imprliovement of radio
wave propagation and other' technical prob-
lems. During WVorldl War I he was active in
government work, serving, among other posi-
tions, as chairman of the Countermeasures
Panel of the Electronics (Committee, expert
consultant Ito the United States Strategic and
Tactical Air Forces on Elect rnic Matters,
and as Associate IDirector of the Radio Re-
search Latboratory at Hlarxvard Utniversity. lie
was awarded a presidential C('ertificate of
Merit for his scientific 'contributions during
World War II. Early in his are'er, he was a
member of the technical staff of \WFAA, and
thereafter Radio Station IWFAA was a client
of his. He was elected a mntembetr of the board
of directors of A. It. lilo Corpioration. March
15, 1960.
DALLAS GORDON RUPIE, widely known
investment bIanker and head of the investment
banking firm of IDallas Itupe & Son, began
his business career with the establishment of
the father-and-son firm of Dallas Rupe & Son
in 1929. In a highly successful career he has
been identified with in y of the largest fi-
nancing projects in Te'xas. In addition to his
private business he has tbeen ai supporters and
leader in many Dallas civic, cultural and
charitable enterprise's. Ile vas made a mem-
ber of the board of directors of the News
in 1960.
