Southwestern Historical Quarterly
for the first year of a long-range project to publish on microfilm
the Bexar Archives. The project, which was inaugurated in Jan-
uary, 1966, is directed by Chester V. Kielman, university ar-
chivist, assisted by Carmela Leal as chief preparator and Mag-
dalena Benavides Sumpter as assistant preparator.
Publication of the internationally important collection of doc-
umentation for the Spanish and Mexican periods of Texas and
Southwestern history has been a continuing goal of several gen-
erations of Texas scholars for seven decades. Beginning with
George P. Garrison and Lester G. Bugbee, the list of concerned
supporters includes names well-known among the ranks of As-
sociation members, culminating most recently with those of Wal-
ter P. Webb, Pat I. Nixon, Frank Wardlaw, Joe B. Frantz, and
Association presidents Fred Cotten, George Isbell, and J. P.
Bryan. Through the auspices of the National Historical Publi-
cations Commission, the door of scholarship will at last be un-
locked to the historical treasure house of the Bexar Archives.
The 1966 project calendar provides for the production of a
general descriptive guide to the collection and the completion
of pre-filming processes for the eighteenth century manuscript
files with detailed calendar descriptions of the documents con-
