Southwestern Historical Quarterly
Texas in the War, 1861-1865. Compiled by Marcus J. Wright.
Edited and Notes by Harold B. Simpson. Hillsboro (Hill
Junior College Press), 1965. Pp. xx+246. Bibliography, illus-
trations, index. $7.50.
After serving the United States War Department for thirty
years in the collecting and editing of Confederate records for
publication in the I28-volume War of the Rebellion: Official
Records of the Union and Confederate Armies (1880-1901),
former Confederate General Marcus J. Wright published a com-
pilation of data on Tennessee in the War, z86z-z865 (1908). He
also compiled two similar manuscripts: one on Arkansas which
was rediscovered and published in 1963, and one on Texas which
forms the basis of this volume edited by Harold B. Simpson, in-
structor of history at Texas Christian University.
Wright's compilation includes lists of Texas' Confederate gen-
erals-with their service records and staff officers; infantry, cav-
alry, and artillery units-with their officers; quartermasters; gov-
ernors; senators and representatives; and naval and marine offi-
cers. In addition, there are lists of campaigns and other military
events in Texas during the war, brigadier generals of state troops,
Texas' Confederate veterans who served in the United States
Congress, local designations for Texas' Confederate units, Texas'
Union Army organizations-with their officers, and a statement
on the military population of Texas in 186o. To these varied
compilations, Simpson has added extensive notes and biographical
sketches, correcting and amplifying with the aid of recent studies
Wright's rather concise and occasionally vague statements on
the period.
From E. W. Winkler's out-of-print Journal of the Secession
Convention of Texas, 1861 (1912), Simpson has added several
appendices including: the Texas Ordinance of Secession, a list
of delegates to the Texas Secession Convention, the county votes
on secession, and correspondence on the surrender of United
States government property in Texas in 1861. Among the ap-
pendices also are a list of important events in Texas, 1861-1865,
compiled by Professor John Duncan of Texas A & M University,
and a list of the original officers and non-commissioned officers of
Hood's Brigade, compiled by Simpson.548
