Award Winners Named
Claude H. Hall and the Bexar Archives Microfilm Project
were named winners of the Carroll and Tullis awards at this
year's annual meeting of the Association, held in San Antonio,
May 16-18. The two recently established prizes each carry a cash
award in the amount of $100oo and honor the memory of a long-
time servant of the Association. The late H. Bailey Carroll was
director for twenty years, and the late Mrs. Coral Horton Tullis
was treasurer from 1927 to 1942 and secretary-treasurer from 1942
to 1967. The first Carroll Award was made at last year's meeting,
and the Tullis Prize was inaugurated at the San Antonio meeting.
The Carroll Award, given annually to the author of the best
article appearing in the Quarterly, went to Professor Hall for
his contribution, "The Fabulous Tom Ochiltree: Promoter, Poli-
tician, and Raconteur." Published in the January 1968 issue, the
Ochiltree article traced the career of one of Galveston's most
colorful political figures. Hall, who has three degrees from the
University of Virginia, is a specialist in United States diplomatic
history and has served on the history faculty of Texas A8cM Uni-
versity since 1951. He is the author of numerous articles and of
a biography of Abel P. Upshur.
The Tullis Memorial Prize for the greatest contribution to
Texas history in 1967 was awarded to the Bexar Archives Micro-
film Project, which is supervised by the University of Texas
Archives and sponsored by the National Historical Publications
Commission. Chester V. Kielman, director of the Archives, ac-
cepted the award in behalf of the project. The award money will
be invested in recording equipment in order to expedite the
completion of the remaining segments of the program.
